Help - Moving to Avon,CT and I'm gonna be lost without Fairway!

  • 6

Moving to Avon from Long Island in a couple of months. So, so excited for so, so many reasons...

BUT - I don't know what I'm going to do without Fairway.

Tell me please....where are the best places to shop? Great meats, cheeses......decent produce.....items imported from Europe....etc?

I know there's a couple of Whole Foods in West Hartford, but what else?

  1. My favorite local grocer is Highland Park Market. A lot of it is the standard Stop and Shop stuff, but they do have some higher end items. The prepared foods in particular are out of this world. Great service too. Here's a link for the one closest to Avon: www.highlandparkmarket.com/farmington...

For cheese, I used to go to Say Cheese Too in West Hartford, I believe they have closed though. I think the one in Simsbury is related, and if so, you'll find some good stuff there. Here's a list to get your mouth watering: www.saycheese-lgp.com/Cheese_Selectio...

I second Highland Park Market, particularly for meats. There's also a Stew Leonard's in Newington, Connecticut on the Berlin Turnpike, which is not too exotic, but purveys great fresh stuff at reasonable prices. You'l find that the Stop and Shop supermarket in Avon carries a fine selection of cheeses and salumeria.

The D&D Italian Market in Wethersfield is like going to Italy. A trip to Hartford's Fraklin Avenue is also a great way to get a dose of Italian. A. Dong market on New Britain Avenue in West Hartford's Elmwood section is a supermarket-sized Asian grocery that'll take any foodie hours to get through.

Finally, Hall's market on Park Road in West Hartford carries superb meats, again at reasonable prices. Nothing fancy; just very good.

Don't fret, just 'cause you're not close to the venerable Fairway doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy great food shopping!

    2. depending on what town you are working in there may be a bunch of other ideas...so the hilites already given are good

      1. Best of luck on your move!

Highland Park - Farmington - excellent meats
        Whole Foods - West Hartford
Big Y - Avon (I have good luck with produce and meats there..)
        Stop and Shop - Avon
        Shaw's - Canton
New England Pasta Company - Avon (good place for take-out meals, fresh pasta...they also carry a small selection of cheese)

The other places mentioned in previous posts are absolutely worth checking out as well.

        1. Trader Joes in West Hartford near Westfarms Mall....Aldi's (which I believe owns Trader Joes) has a location on the Berlin Turnpike in Newington and they 're suppose to be building one on New Park Avenue in West Hartford.
