Review of Macaroni on St-Laurent

I have been asked by another poster to come and post a review of my dinner at Macaroni supper club on St-Laurent street. I will probably offend people while doing so even though it is not my intention. A friend of mine had asked me to go to a place where there would be ambiance and she wanted that before food. She needed a bit of cheering up and since we were on vacation, I tried finding a place like that. I came up with Macaroni supper club and made a reservation. I have to say that the booze was the best thing about the place. We started with a cocktail and the bartender did a nice one. We then ordered food...I knew the food would not be the best, but I did not think it would be that bad. I had a salmon tartare and to tell you the truth, I had just a few bites because I was scared to get food poisoning!! It was so bad, it was not even funny. We each had pasta and I advise people to stick with that. My friend had a plate of pasta with mushroom and truffle oil and it was not that bad. I had the mac and cheese and it was okay.

I could talk about the clientele but it could get nasty and I could receive death threats! I have been to Buena Note and Globe in the past, I don't know why but I did, but Macaroni is like a bad replica of those places. It is like a cheap imitation where people who don't have the money go to flash something, I don't know what, but they try to flash. The waitresses are dressed in a bad fuschia low-cut mini-dress. Our waitress was nice but I did not ask her about today's stock trades!

The only good thing was the music. We did not stick around though because they only wanted to get rid of us. They had never mentionned that we had to leave at a certain hour but at one time they told us that we had to leave, even though we had ordered cocktails, a bottle of wine and after dinner drinks.

Like I said, I don't want to offend anyone who goes there weekly but I would not advise people to go there unless they want to have fun, eat pretty bad food and be shown on their way out if they don't fit in the hostess' idea of ideal patrons!

Spend a bit more and go to Buena Note if you really want to experience the St-Laurent's experience!

  1. "but at one time they told us that we had to leave"

what time was that ? were they closing ?

We almost went there for an early dinner on friday, but went to Leméac instead.

We had a reservation for 7:30. We had sat down and were eating our appetizers when the hostess told us that we had to leave for 9:30. I told them that no one had told me this when I did my reservation. She answered us, after drawing a blank for a couple of seconds, that since we had not been informed that it would be okay. The waitress then told us around 9:20 that we had to leave, the hostess never came back to inform us. We then repeated what the hostess told us and it seemed like a lot of miscommunication between them. The waitress came back to tell us that there was a cancellation so we could stay without problem. Let's just say that I was not too pleased with them not having told me this when I made the reservation!

I think you really made a great choice in going to Lemeac. The food there is supposed to be very good. I almost went a couple of times but we always end up going to L'Eveque instead. I have to go one of these days!

They have 2 seating times, kind of like Garde Manger, one at 7:30 and one at 9:30. So if you reserve for 7:30, you are expected to leave in time for the 2nd seating....

    2. Too bad you had a lousy time.
No fun at all to look forward to a place, only to be frustrated with the food or atmosphere or the service.

Oh...we laughed I might add! It is not nice to say it, but we laughed (without being too mean of course) a bit at the people taking themselves seriously. Some people go there to be seen so we were doing the seeing! I laughed a bit at the hostess chewing her gum and making balloons. My friend thought I was kidding when I told her. It is also the tiniest bathrooms I have ever seen in a public place. There is a small sink and mirror above it and there is no space to wait when there is someone there.

I would stick to non-complicated dishes like the one my friend had...pasta, mushrooms and truffle oil. She put parmesan on it and it was not that bad. I would take dishes like that and not go with complicated ones. Like I said, the music was good!

      2. I think you're right about the crowd in that there's less money than on St-Laurent but that's what I rather enjoy, that it's less flashy.

        1. There's a review of Macaroni in the Voir this week.

Highlights : Waitresses have nice racks (Les serveuses, généreuses au balcon,), Waiters look like they dress at sear's; but the service is nice and friendly.

          Foodwise : not that impressive.

            Here it is:

            http://www.voir.ca/publishing/article...

Seems the overall impression was similar to Chesterman's in the Gazette. Which again raises why they got 3.5/4 from her (compared with 2/5 in Voir).

              Wait a minute!
              I gave Macaroni 2 1/2 stars. Where did you see 3 1/2?

yep, looks like 2.5 there, Shattered

                1. re: porker

It does. I could swear it was 3.5 when it first went online. And I know I'm the not only one here who saw / commented on 3.5/4, though that part of the thread was deleted... maybe the Gaz typo'ed? (& that would explain why the commentary on the incongruity between the writeup and 3.5 rating was deleted?)
Anyway, let the record show it got 2.5 from Ms. Chesterman.

                  1. re: Shattered

Reading your reponse had me look back a bit. The original poster had started a previous thread on Macaroni (followed up by the review above).

In that original thread, jellybelly25 points to a gazette review:
                    http://www.montrealgazette.com/life/D...

lo and behold it shows 3.5!

                    What gives? Lesley?

Let the record show that Shattered is not loopy.

Oh, the original thread is here

                      1. re: porker

Thanks, porker, I was wondering what happened to that thread. I didn't realize there were two on the same resto.

              2. Let the record show: I too, was shocked upon reading the online review of Macaroni. 3 1/2 stars!?!?!!! But the paper version read 2 1/2. I checked because I couldn't believe my eyes. This is clearly a major mistake on the gazette's part. At least the actual rating was indeed more fair and appropriate given the comme si comme ca review. Hopefully they'll be more careful in the future!!
