Website takes forever to open

  • 6

Yesterday and today I could NOT get the website to open. I would click on the link and wait and wait and nothing would happen. All other sites I go to open fine. Today I finally went to chow.com rather than directly to the chowhound boards. I let the computer keep trying - it took over 10 minutes for the page to open.

  1. Since last Saturday night, I've had the same problem. Can't get discussion threads to open, whereas the message board indices and chow.com pages are just fine. Disabling google.com fixed the problem, must be a feed that is running slow now. I've done it on a "temporary" basis, and as soon as google is live again, the site slows down again until I disable google.com scripts again. Just did it right now, hasn't gone away yet.

It is a major pain to have to disable google.com for chowhound to work. It means that I can't go google searches without enabling it again. It means that maps on Places records are blank. It means that I cant' "link to a place".

I had this happen for a short while yesterday- the page would start to load, with the page title in the browser bar, but would stall out and not load and it was "waiting for google.com" However, it seemed to fix itself and I haven't had the problem since.

It has continued today. As I said, the temporary disabling ends, then I have a chance to check again, and it's still a problem. That may be a random coincidence. When I'm on broadband like today, it's not as long a delay. But when I'm on dial-up, and that is a day or two a week usually, chowhound.chow.com never loads even after waiting more than 30 minutes with a bunch of tabbed pages open hoping one will make it through. then they either keep spinning or revert to DNS error or chowhound.chow.com not found error messages.

Yeah, I figured out yesterday that google was causing Chowhound problems. Good to see this to confirm that is what is going on.

    2. Google.com and googleanalytics.com have been hanging the site off and on for quite awhile. I've noticed this not only on Chowhound, but on several other sites that use the google analytics tool and/or some type of google feed.
Maybe the tech people need to get with Google and see if there is some way to fix this.

Yes, it has been going on for several months now, and you and others have reported it here. I turend off googleanalytics.com some time ago and it hasn't seemed to affect the functionality of the site. Unfortunately, blocking scripts from google.com has more far-reaching effects.
