Italian downtown

NYCFORKER Mar 2, 2009 07:41 PM

Hey there
I have my parents coming in town and it is my father's birthday so my wife and I are going to take them out for dinner. The only catch is it's a special birthday and they have other close friends in the city who are going to join us. So I am looking for a place that is good, fun and won't break the wallet (read my wallet). Oh, and ideally I would like to be able to make a reservation as their friends are coming for the UES and probably aren't used to waiting like we might have to. Places I would have liked but don't take reservations or are committed are Franks, Supper, Gemma, Lupa....Would like something like a Piadina but just a touch "nicer"-not that there is anything wrong with Piadina as it an old favorite.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

When are you trying to reserve for? You might want to check Italian under Open Table, see what's still available, and then ask us about those places.

Have you tried Cannonau? I haven't been there but am going in a week or so because a friend recommended it.

DS: I could have written this post, except it is my sister in law not my father. She's having a big birthday, and we want a fun place for the extended family and a few of her friends, but we want to make reservations. Did you have any luck? Please post.
