Church Street Diner

Anyone know what's going on with this place. Saw it on Resturaunt Makeover the other night but this place has been closed for probably over a year now. I remember seeing the Resturaunt Makeover signs out front last spring but then nothing happened. The signs saying "Reopening soon we miss you!" have been up for at least six months. Walked by tonight and peeked in a bit and place looked far from being ready to open.

    Anyone been by here yet? I noticed they're doing dinner on certain nights and it looks like comfort food greatness.- meatloaf, salisbury steak. I live not too far and ashamed to say that I have not stopped in since they reopened. It always seems fairly busy when walking by which is a good sign.

      I've been several time for breakfast and lunch. The food is homey, but usually good. (I think the only dish I didn't enjoy there was the hot beef sandwich) My partner particularly enjoys their eggs benedict (weekends only, I believe).

      The prices are very reasonable, but IMO, the best thing about the restaurant is the awesome (but not overly) friendly service. It's definitely on my neighborhood go-to list.

      i am an ex employee and although i cant divulge too much ,all i can say is that we were told we would be off for 2 weeks for the makeover and then after 3 weeks we were all issued layoff notices sighting "lack of work available". to my knowledge, none of us have ever been called back.restaurant makeover has a low success rate though(last i heard,roughly 70% of the establishments that have been on the show,end up closing within a year of the makeover despite the brief upturn that the shows publicity causes) .this television show basically cost 5 cooks and 4 waiters thier jobs.

        there seems to be a building permit in the window. Is that an OLD building permit, or is someone really going to do something. Th etwo owners were real sweeties and I am sure it reeally pained them to lay staff off. Went to a friends wedding reception there, and the food and service was GRRRREATT!

            i know it pained them much,,not only did they have to lay us off but had to close thier place of buissiness. its very sad because this was one of the kitchens that i honestly enjoyed working in. richard was an exellent person to work for and we were all a rather tight nit crew. i can say it was a honour to work with my fellow kitchen staff here and many of them i still consider my good friends.

              Every time I was there (lunch) they were really busy. Great guys and food. What happened?

                This appears to be open for biz now. Menu is posted outside and looks about the same as before they closed. It's been so long I can't remember now but glad they were able to reopen.

                  Has anyone been, if it has indeed reopened? It's very close by and I'd definitely give them weekend business if they're good.

                    It has re-opened and it is probably the best breakfast on the strip

                      now open!! only till 4pm weekdays and weekend i dont know

                      burgers, salads,poutine....

                      wanted to try but went there on evening time was already closed because not open on evenings

                        Best breakfast on the strip ain't saying much! :) Aside from Cafe California the strip ranges from bad to horrible. But will check it out!

                          and cafe california is pretty mediocre as well...

            Rents on Church Street are very high due to the general traffic pattern (sidewalk based) and the fact that street is not run down like parts of Yonge Street. So it is really difficult to make a go of a business, and many fail.

              But that's why I was asking. It looks like they're still in the space that's been closed for around a year, so someone's paying rent on it. I live just a couple of blocks from it and don't think it ever reopened after RM was there. You'd think they'd want to be open for the traffic the show would drive after it aired. Those sliders they made on the show looked awesome and make me want to go!

                My girlfriend and I used to eat breakfast here regularly. It was fantastic, really.

                I'm curious what's going on with them. I'm also not sure of the ethics of RM showing this episode when the restaurant never even re-opened. What a lousy show.

                abigllama, tell me they didn't change the Molly Wood's Breakfast...

                  On the show Crawford just gave them a hard time about Molly Wood on the sauce, but looks like it's going to stay. Who knows since no one seems to know if this place is going to be open or not. Hopefully someone has an idea of what's going on.
