Truffles in Michigan?

crownsbroyal Mar 2, 2009 10:55 AM

Does anyone know of any where in the Detroit metro area and surrounding suburbs that carries fresh truffles? A couple places I spoke to are only able to order them for me. Thanks

Zingerman's in Ann Arbor in season. (call first)
Papa Joes on Woodward (Brimingham) or on Rochester Road & Tienken in Rochester Hills carries them some times.

Earthy Delights in DeWitt (just N of Lansing) has an amazing array of truffles, mushrooms, oils, and other ... earthy delights. You can access them at www.earthy.com . You won't regret it. Earthy provisions chefs around the country, so you can count on them.

As a chef I have used their products. Once. I was not pleased and never ordered from them again. I have spoken to several others that have had a similar experience.
Do yourself a major favor and order from either a reliable vendor or make the trek to Zingerman's.

You're not saying Zingerman's has good prices are you? If you were it would be the first time that ever happened.

In their defense, they are pretty reliable in terms of quality.

My advice would be to eliminate the middle man and buy from someone who brings them in. I have ordered from Urbani, the largest importer to the US and had good luck with them before, but that was a long time ago. I called their NY office.

Truffles are funny things, there is an astonishing amount of shenanigans that takes place with their sale, not just here but everywhere. Not too surprising when you think about something that expensive. Caveat emptor.

Zingerman's has very competetive prices on truffles in season. The real benefit there is you can see them and smell them.

I saw a jar or two at Plum Market at 15 and Lasher.
