Shrimp Shack Key West Awesome

  • 2

We took a break from Miami and drove down to Key West for an overnighter. I wish we had known about this place earlier. We were actually looking for a restaurant someone recommended when we saw a sign for Shrimp Shack. It is located in the back of a fish house right on the dock at the end of Front Street on Stock Island. In the display case were beautiful KW pink shrimp, Grouper, and some nice Yellowtail. There was about a 75 pound yellowtail being butchered in the back room too.

The food here is as fresh as it gets, simply prepared and spot on. We started with a pound of KW pinks peel n eat style. They were absolutely delicious with just enough snap to them and tender too. Cooked in a nice shrimp stock boil. and served with their coctail sauce which to me seemed like a mix of red chili sauce, horseradish and Mae Ploy sweet chili sauce. It was great with the shrimp. We also had a Grouper sandwich "groggy style" which is a seared grouper filet topped with jerk seasonings(wet) and caramelized onions. It is served with a small potato and shrimp salad, steak fries and tartar sauce. This was also spectacular. It was perfectly cooked, not rubbery at all and the jerk seasoning was one of those great wet marinades. I wanted more grouper after that so ordered just a filet blackened. I wish there had been a bit more cajun seasoning and a little more crust but it was great nonetheless. Just a nice fresh piece of fish perfectly cooked with some more tartar sauce.

I also ordered the fried KW pink shrimp. This stuff was killer. It was 8 pieces of nice sized shrimp battered with just the right amount of fish fry batter and perfectly fried to a crispy crackly shatter. They were also served with the same cocktail sauce. I wish we had ordered these first because I probably would have had 2 or 3 orders of them.

You can link to a menu and the store at Fishbusterz.com.

You eat outside on the dock underneath a couple of tarps right where the boats come in. There are huge tarpon swimming right at the edge of the dock.

This is the kind of food I wish I had eaten a lot more of this week.
Definitely worth the trip.
