Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in France (including Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Marseilles)

where to eat in paris?

I will be in paris from march 26 to 30. my first time there.

I am seeking recommendations on restaurants, bakeries, cafes, etc.

What are the top four restaurants in the 50 euro range? (a bit more is ok, I would like to splash out once or twice)

What are the top four casual dining (simple sandwiches, etc) recommendations?

where should I go for crepes, croissants, breads, pastries, etc. What are the very best bakeries?

I am totally overwhelmed and don't even know where to start. Basically, I would welcome any and all recommendations on where a first time visitor who LOVES TO EAT and wants to experience as much of the Paris food scene should be sure to go during a four day stay.

Please and thank you. So grateful for your suggestions.

  1. As most of these topics have been discussed quite recently, check the board in your categories and l am sure you will find your information. Souphie is the most knowledgeable in my opinion, just follow his lead.

      1. There are probably as many Top Four Lists as there are folks opining in this Forum! I would read many threads and pick your own four!

        1. I feel for you, visitngparis. I always research my meals before I travel, and have never been as overwhelmed as when I researched for Paris.

re: finding "The Best", I will link this post by PhilD which neatly articulates the inherent problems of taking that approach (one that works in most cities, but not in Paris, because there really are just too many good places)

As for my own trip (which I'm still writing up), here were the places I really loved that would fit one of the categories you're asking about:

Restaurant in 50 euro range: L'Ami Jean
Macarons, cannele, and croissant: Pierre Herme
Best gift for someone you really like: the 17 euro sachet of mango-passionfruit caramels from Jacques Genin
          Crepe: Creperie Bretonne Fleurie
          Sour cherry clafouti: Gerard Mulot

Aside from the CH board and friends' recs, I found David Lebowitz' blog and Clotilde Dusoulier's book really helpful.
