Peach and blackberry pie, Noe Valley Bakery

Since I have not had many kind words to say about Noe Valley Bakery in the past (though I have mostly tried pastries and cakes, which I think are mediocre there, not pies), I feel obligated to report that I recently had a peach and blackberry pie from there that was excellent! The filling was delicious, and the crust was eye-openingly good. It was served at a potluck and was a hit with all present. Lots of raves.

I don't know where the heck they got peaches and berries like that in February (Chilean fruit perhaps?) and they could have been, or pie could have been, previously frozen, but it certainly tasted fresh and I didn't think a crust could do that well after being frozen. (?). I believe the cost was $19.95. for a good size pie.

  1. i agree that I also was not a fan of NVB in past years. but tried a few things recently, and they've made some major improvements in breads (baguettes), pastries (great morning bun, not burnt like Tartine's--more like la farine's), and changing offerings (cupcakes, scones, etc) over the last 3 years. mentioned this to the owner who happened to be there one morning (hey, what changed over the past 3 years?), and he admitted they were taking things for granted for a period, and are now taking things seriously, doing their best to win customers. the baguettes are wonderfully soft but structured inside, while still crusty--i like them better than acme's for sandwich making.
