roadtrip to PIG OUT at St.Mary's in Tucson !
ok... after living in vegas for a while ,my frustration from trying to find OUTSTANDING mexican with hand made tortillas reached its zenith last week.
i did the only thing i knew to do and that was to do a roadtrip to tucson to the BEST cheap hole in the wall mexican food with tender hand made flour tortillas in the southwest.
it took me 8 hours of driving but it was well worth it ! for 3 days i pigged out on their amazing food..... i even took a room at a motel around the corner from them so i could bring it back to my room and have them close by if i wanted more !
all i can say is MY GOD ! if ever there was a reason to move BACK to tucson.... st marys is IT! LOL
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE HERE : get ALL burritos DOUBLE WRAPPED ! it costs a bit more but its worth it for the taste and it keeps the burrito from busting any leaks.
before i left i ordered 5 burritos to go.... and got 3 dozen of those AMAZING tortillas for the freezer.
i have to tell you that the burritos held up VERY well on the trip back and i put them in freezer when i got home.
the best way to eat them after they have been frozen is to let them slowly defrost in the fridge and then take them out and leave them on the counter till they are about room temperature.
then put them (no foil) in the micowave in a covered dish and set the temp on medium or the defrost setting to gently warm them back to life.
i just now finished one and it was FABULOUS! it was a SO good i just cant believe that when they are gone.... that will be IT...till the next road trip. LOL
anyway..... dont forget to get a container of their red sauce too. its fresh and it will be ok if you keep it cool. what i do is pour the sauce into an ice cube tray and freeze it in cubes so i can take out only what i need. this sauce is VERY fragile and wont last long in the fridge.
but frozen into cubes. ... you can defrost it one cube at a time for what you need for that meal.
its hard to believe that here in vegas....there are NO hole in the wall joints with food like st. marys. lots of mexican places but nobody making this wonderful homemade food.
pity.
if you make a road trip to st. marys in the summer months... dont forget your cooler so you can bring back some of their tres leche cake as well. SOOO YUMMY!
ok..... now time to sit back and digest and plan the next trip. LOL
you LUCKY folks that live in tucson ! ENJOY!

I am in the Old Pueblo right now, doing something very similar. St. Mary's is on our list for tomorrow.
Almost as good is Carolina's in Phoenix, conveniently located within 5 minutes of the rental car center at Sky Harbor airport. Get off the plane, get the car, head for the best Machaca burros in the world.....
