Southern BBQ in Calgary

tanya73 Mar 1, 2009 09:27 AM

Looking for a chicken/ribs and bisquits kind of place. My friend has a massive craving for some southern food like the kind fourd in the TV show Diners, Drive Ins and Dives....is there such a place in Calgary?

Nope. I'm from Alabama & I can tell you there's NOTHING. The two closest kind of places would be Big T's and the Palomino.

I like Big T's a little better than Palomino, but neither can really compare to what you get in the south. BBQ in Canada means grilling a steak, sorry.

Such is the case in 95% of the US as well.

Can you provide a reference for that statistic please? It seems a bit high to me.

              It's called "rhetoric."

                As for your friends need:
Corn Fritters at chicken on the way = pretty good
Big T's = not great, but not totally inauthentic (stick with pork)

I'm also a big Southern BBQ fan. Palomino and Big T's are ok. I don't think the turnover is high so there is a lot of reheating. Definately nothing like real Texas BBQ. Your best bet is to buy a smoker and do it at home. It's not hard to produce "Q" better than restaurants.

I would recommend Big T's, and try the deep fried pickles. :) It's not as great as the stuff in Diners, Drive Ins and Dives but those pickles are divine!

PS - Don't order the rice pudding for dessert! Awful. But the peacan pie is great.

Been awhile since we've been to Big T's... I don't remember having room to eat dessert :) Just curious but what makes the rice pudding awful? DH likes his dry (baked) whereas I like mine more like my morning oatmeal.

So it's just me then that finds Big T's bland?

I don't think anyone has raved about how wonderful Big Ts is. It's just one of 2 places that has food that the op asked for. :)

You are very right. I've had a better pulled pork sandwich in Prince George of all places.
