Taste of Thai Finally

  • 2

The long anticipate addition to the downtown Milford CT dining scene has finally opened. I have been looking at the "coming soon signs", and newspaper covering the windows at the 22 Broad street location since before the Oyster Festival last September. The restaurant is located in an area behind the Dunkin Donuts shop and behind Archie Moore's. It actually opened several weeks ago.

Apparently the powers to be in Milford have been very slow in issuing permits to let this restaurants open.

Went last night around 6pm to find only a few tables filled. The space is very plainly decorated but very very clean. Immediately greeted by the owners. This is owned by a husband and wife team and this is not their first restaurant. Very gracious and friendly people.

There is a very extensive menu with close to 100 items. All the tradition items are present like pad thai and curry's but also some things that I have never seen before, like Pad Pik Pow and spicy bamboo. There are many Vegetarian items.. The most expensive entrees were 18 bucks for the duck and soft shell crap dishes. Most are $10-$12. The also have a very well stocked bar and wine selection.

I ordered my usually dish, red curry. I told the waitress that I like my Thai food very spicy. She looked oddly at me and took my order.

The kitchen was quick, which will change as soon as others discover this gem. The curry was delicious, nice and spicy at least 10 medium sized shrimp with eggplant, green beans, bamboo shoots, peppers and lots of thai basil. It was served with jasmine rice on a beautiful ceramic banana leaf plate. My dining partner had pork in yellow curry which she also thoroughly enjoyed. (devoured )

The owner came to our table several times to make sure everything was right. (translation.. not to spicy right) I think the seven months of delay in opening the restaurant might have been a financial drain. The wife told me that they will not be able to hire additional help for several weeks. So for now she has additional family helping out. (In a scene right out of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservation) the cook comes out of the kitchen yells something in Thai makes a hand motion and returns to the kitchen..Now that's authentic thai food !!!!

This is a very good Thai restaurant and I would love to see it survive. It is as good as any of the New Haven Thai places and without the parking hassles. I am looking forward to a great Thai meal on a warm summer night and a leisurely stroll down to the harbor for a little Scoopy Doo ice cream right on the dock.

Broad St in Milford, along the green, is loaded with great restaurants and bars. If you have not visited your missing a treat. Among the better places, Rainbow Garden, Liquid Lunch, Citrus, Seven Seas, Bistro Basque, and Atlantic Cafe. Great dinner then a nice safe stroll along the green or down to the harbor... Now add Taste of Thai to that list......

Please try to visit soon and help make this place successful. I would hate to drive to New Haven again for my red curry.

chow for now
