We're looking for a newish, small place to try in Manhattan or Brooklyn for a rare date night tonight. Ideas? We love all cuisines. Thanks!

A few more specifics would be helpful. Casual or fancy? Any particular Manhattan neighborhood? Per person budget for food only (drinks, tax & tip additional)?

Note: For Brooklyn recs, post on the Outer Boroughs board.

Sorry, belatedly realized I should have done somthing separate on Brooklyn board. Aplogies to all!

Really, we are open to ANYTHING. We used to go out all the time pre-kids and now don't even have a want-to-try-it list. I guess I'd say nothing on the order of Per Se, something lively and new where we we have a chance of getting in without a two-hour wait. Past favorites have been Le Gigot, Blue Ribbon, Tabla. Thanks for any ideas.

Brown Cafe is a great place. Great food, extensive wine list, very intimate, good atmosphere. Very out of the way though. 48 Hester St. in the Lower East Side. 212-477-2427

Definitely La Sirene if you can get reservations there - might want to call ahead. It is sooo tiny, but I was there on Wednesday night and had a fantastic meal.

The goat cheese tart is just naughty, and the moules dijonais are to die for. I think you'll be pleased with anything there as long as you like French with a little Carribean flair.

      It's BYOB, too.
