Wine Education Courses - Edmonton
Hello,
I have completed the Intermediate Certificate with the Independent Wine Education Trust (UK Based), and am looking to continue my studies. This was in Toronto, but I have since moved to Edmonton. I had read that the IWEG was going to have courses soon in Edmonton, but in my searches, I have yet to find out where/when they're being offered. The closest I see is Vancouver.
Are there any other reputable programs in the city? Any that would recognize my already-taken course, so I don't have to start at the beginning again?

Hi KayceeK. You can continue WSET ( which I think is what you mean by independant Wine Education trust) courses here in Edmonton ( thru the Art Institute of Vancouver). Visit ww.winecollege.ca or call Mark Shipway at 1-800-667-7288
Your next step is the advanced level. Or you can email me back.
cheers

Not sure what you mean by Independent Wine Education Trust, but from a bit of googling figure you probably mean Independent Wine Education Guild, which seems to offer Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) courses. If that is what you are looking for, I've seen them advertised in the Journal fairly often. It looks like Mary Bailey is teaching them...she's a fairly recent grad of that program herself and I guess she knows her stuff (have spoken with her at various events around town) but I consider her more of a foodie than a great wine expert.
If I were you, I would see if your previous certificate can be adapted to take the higher level Independent Sommelier Guild (ISG) courses offered at NAIT. They are taught by William Bincoletto, who's been in the business for decades. I've never done a full course with him, but attended several tastings he has hosted and he's a great educator and just full of knowledge - wine isn't just his job, it is his life!

re: KayceeK
if you happen to be in the southwest of the city some time (riverbend/terwillegar specifically) drop by Vines, the wine store on the northeast corner at 23 av and Rabbit Hill (have to specify, as there are 3 liquor stores on that corner!) - William works there and could give you details about the program.

re: Dan G
Hi Dan
This is Mary. I'd like to correct some info that you posted online recently. My bonafides: I am an instructor with the Art Instute of Vancouver in the WSET program in Edmonton. I am a certified ISG (Intenational Sommlier Guild) sommelier having graduated from that program in 2007. I have two courses left for the WSET diploma having completed the foundation, intermediate and advanced levels. In addition I hold a certificate in Spanish wine education. Before that I was a wine merchant and importer. So as much as you may consider me a foodie, I have a long and varied history in wine. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to set the record straight.
