Where to eat in Waltham or Newton

Meeting friends we see seldomly. Waltham or Newton a good mtg ground. Want excellent food but not killer prices. Prefer Italian , Mediterranean, seafood. Was thinking La Campania or Lumiere. Any suggestions?

Best place in Nonantum is Vecchia Roma. Run by a nice couple. Great food. I'd say prices weren't too killer. Been a while since I have been there though:

Francesca's in Nonantum is an old-school, family Italian place -- nothing fancy, pretty good food, homey atmosphere.

A little less expensive, but very good Italian is Biagio.

I am actually not a huge fan of Biago. I have only been once though, and it was right when it opened so perhaps I should give it another try. I did not think it was that much less expensive that Il Capriccio or La Campania (maybe $10-20 total) and food wise not even comparable! My husband ordered a Fruti di Mar and it was not washed out properly and there was sand in his pasta! I have heard though that the upstairs patio is a lot of fun in the summer and the food up there is cheaper and better. Anyone know about this?

I am a big fan of Il Capriccio. I think the food is more unique that La Campania, and I prefer the over-all ambiance. But, La Campania is a very small step lower, the food is still very good. I don't think either have killer prices, but of course it just depends on what you order. As TheTrout said, if you order expensive wine, and add on dessert and apps, it can add up quickly!

I like Il Capriccio. I think prices are similar to La Campania.

For something more affordable, we like Fiorella's. They do a good job with red sauce.

Another strong vote for La Campania.

What is your definition of "killer prices"? For 4 people, with a bottle or two of wine, you'll be looking at a tab of $325-400.

                Hi shaebones,
If I were doing the choosing, La Campania would be first choice among semi-equals.
I just never tire of this place.
