The Pita Basket Cafe - Calgary
I stopped by The Pita Basket Cafe yesterday for lunch. They are located at 3221 Sunridge Way NE near the HomeSense, Best Buy, etc. I had notice the location a couple of times but never stopped. No lunch yesterday so I figured I would try it. I was definitely glad I did! They have lots of items on the menu but I decided to try a basic chicken shwarma. I'm not proclaiming to be a Shwarma expert but it was the best one I've ever had. The chicken was so juicy and tasty, the toppings were fresh & the sweet sauce was great. It all came together to make a wonderful shwarma.
They have quite a few bakery items as well. They looked very tasty but I didn't get a chance to try any. This is definitely a great option when you are in this area! (I'm even going to go out on a limb and say it was better than the Shwarma places in Shortpants plaza & definitely cleaner) You can find menu info, etc at their website http://www.pitabasketcafe.com/.
I was somewhat disappointed today. After reading the reviews I went to the Pita Basket for lunch. The girl serving was very friendly and helpful and gave me a taste of the chicken for the chicken shawarma. It was very good so I ordered the Chicken Shawarma Mediterranean platter. Everything was so salty that salt was the overriding taste. It had the potential to be a good meal but pickles, pickled radish, tabouleh, even with the pita bread it still didn't even out the flavours. If you're concerned about your sodium in-take I wouldn't recommend going there. The garlic sauce was basically mayonnaise with some garlic flavour thrown in... Given my experience today I think there are too many other places that make a more authentic sauce and a better tasting shawarma to go back there again.

Thanks Merry! Last time I was over there I don't think it was open yet. That Homesense is one of my faves... I picked up my Denby mugs from there (and some teak patio furnture) bigger ticket items don't seem to vanish quite as quickly there as they do at Beacon Hill or Market Mall.
