A review of 2 in Asheville.

  • 2

Hi Chowers,

I just wanted to give a quick review of two places I have been frequenting whose names are not often on Asheville posts. Hope you enjoy :)

Last night we had dinner at Curras Dom in N. Asheville. The atmosphere is very homey, no frills. Tables are slightly too close and can get loud when everyone knocks back their 3rd margarita. Though what the place lack in atmosphere it makes up for in food and service. Our waitress was extremely well versed in the menu and was able to explain the specials and help us make educated choices. To start I had a guacamole salad served with warm homemade chips. The chips were excellent, the guac could have used a little more kick, some citrus and jalepeno would have made it perfect as the freshness and texture were spot on. The boyfriend had sweetbreads with a salsa corn relish. It was my first time to have them but he said the were very good and I agreed. For entree's I chose scallops and he choose braised pork. The scallops were served with large roasted fennel, a citrus beur blanc, jimica citrus slaw and bits of orange. Upon first bite (scallop only) I was unimpressed. As I took small bites of everything individually I was not overjoyed, however when I made a point to eat it as it should be, with a bit of everything together, it was excellent. Very fresh, bright and buttery in my mouth. The boyfriends pork was divine, the few bites I took literally feel apart when they hit my mouth. To imbibe, we had several of their inventive margritas. While they are somewhat small for the price, they are quite good and authentic not sweet and sour to be found. My favorite was a jalepeno infused margrita. I still feel Limones has the best in town but these are pretty darn good and leave you feeling as though you've had a liquid massage. To end the meal we had flan and tres leche cake. Both were amazing. All in all, Curras Dom is worth a try and we will return.

We have also been haunting Chefs in Motion off Victora Rd in Asheville. Its very small but a wonderful place! They are currently only open for breakfast and lunch maybe 9-5? I've only eaten lunch there and have found it to be fresh and tasty each time. I have gotten they turkey sandwhich with avacado aoli, the best burrito, mo's salad and quiche. The service is quick and effecient and the atmosphere is quaint. The sandwhich was good but somewhat dry, the quiche is wonderful chock full of veggies (no crust). The two stars have been the salad and burrito. The salad was spiniach, gorgonzola, walnuts, bacon and berries. I had the avocado cilantro dressing and added pulled chicken. On this day, I was trying to be health concious while my friend ordered the burrito. The salad was so good, I forgot to be jealous of my friends amazing dish. Chicken was tender and plentiful and the house made dressing was out of this world. The real winner is the burrito, its stuffed with mashed potatos, quiche, cheese and the house made pico (which is divine), I usually get it with chicken. As strange as it sounds, it is to die for, I mean to die for! The menu is varied with sandwhiches, salad, blue plate special, enchilladas and pasta.
You can "rent" Mo and Chefs in Motion for the night for dinner. The boyfriend and I have a anniversary coming up and Mo sat down with us, got a sense for our tastes and created a menu. We have decided to do the dinner "cooking lesson" style so we can learn a few tricks. The dinners are b.y.o.b and we were told to get ready to party. I believe WITH the rental fees ( restaurant and chef) and dinner we will be paying about $135, a steal for a night out completely alone! I will report back to let you all know the experience.
Sorry to be so long winded, but I hope you all enjoy the reviews. Happy Eating!
