City Bistro, Hayward (NY Sandwiches, matzo ball soup, etc.) - any reports?

Just read on Yelp some reviews of City Bistro in Hayward. Seems they have NY Sandwiches on their website. One someone recommends is the Rudolph Giuliani (Not a Political Statement)
Pastrami, Corned Beef, Swiss Cheese, Slaw, Russian Dressing & Grilled Rye $NY size 10.50

Anyone try out the place?

    1. Here's a Chowhound comment on one of their restaurants in Fresno ... which I think was i think was identical to the closed Carmel location.

Lenny's NY Style Deli [Fresno & Carmel]

The above link was sort of 'meh'. I haven't read the Yelp reviews yet, but a look at the sandwiches says NY 'Style" is right. They looked delicious, but if I go I'm not going to set myself up for real deli.

Oddly enough I'm more interested with the dishes from the Carmel area like the artichoke soup or the fried artichokes. When I read the Yelp reviews, if nothing hits me, I might go for those first.

        1. I forwarded your post to a friend of mine and she ate there that night. Here's her 5 star Yelp review:

I ate the best latkes I've ever had tonight. Sorry Mom, these are better than your from-the-Maneschewitz-box latkes. These were magnificent. They weren't even remotely greasy, which was amazing.

I had the two-cheese sandwich with tomato soup. The sandwich was grilled to absolute perfection and the soup had breaded artichoke on top. It was very, very, VERY good.

I can't wait to bring my parents here.

The Yelp rating distribution is pretty impressive (mostly 5s):

            1. I got to try City Bistro Sun 12/20/09 for lunch at noon. It's in the Target parking lot, but close to Panda Express & Country Waffles.

              I got:

1/2 NY pastrami sandwich $8.95 - small sized, it comes w/ warm pastrami on toasted rye bread. small sides: potato salad, cole slaw, pasta salad & 1 pickle. I thought everything was ok.

Small matzo ball soup - w/ pasta, carrots, onions, 1 matzo ball soup w/ herbs $3.25. If u want chicken it's $1 more. I didn't get the chicken. Soup & matzo ball soup was fine, I passed on the veggies.

They carry Dr. Brown's soda from the East Coast $2.75. I tried their famous drink Cel Ray (celery soda w/ natural flavors). It's a glass bottle, 12oz. I thought it was ok but weird to drink celery soda. Sweet & a bit bitter from the celery. 140 calories.

My total before tip $16.41. Credit cards taken. One unisex bathroom in the back.

Website no longer working. I might go back, not in a hurry.

                1. re: hhc

Dr. Brown's is nothing. When you are in Berkeley, try the celery soda at Saul's Deli. They make it themselves from actual celery rather than 'natrual flavors'. It is a totally different thing.
