Trader Joe's frozen Butter Chicken

I gave in to temptation and bought the frozen Butter Chicken entree at TJ's yesterday, and made it for dinner last night. The rice was fairly blah - next time I'll steam my own jasmine rice and toss what came in the TJ's package - but the entree itself was WONDERFUL. The frozen naan was also good.

Are the other Indian entrees as good as the Butter Chicken? And is the fresh naan as good (or better) than the frozen? It felt a little stale in the package, which is why we opted for the frozen.

  1. I've heard good things about the frozen naan, but I've never tried it. I did try the fresh naan and it left a lot to be desired. The frozen is supposed to be better, from what I've heard.

I like a lot of the Indian entrees at Trader Joe's, the ones that come in a box and are not frozen. I also really love the veggie masala burgers.

I recommend you do try the frozen naan. It's one of my TJ's staples, stays fresh in the freezer, and warms up in the oven in a flash.

I second that, Emm. We've had great success with the frozen naan.

    2. What other frozen indian entrees are there?

I saw a chicken vindaloo and a curry while I was there.

        1. re: Suzy Q

          The vindaloo was horrid
The veggies in it were cubed carrots and peas. Pretty pathetic. The chicken and sauce were much better than the butter chicken, imo. But, I thought the butter chicken was pretty bad. I do, have in my posession the "vegetarian thali" which we'll be trying soon. I have high hopes, but, well, come on, all of the shelf stable Indian food realy is not very good. It just seems like a great idea in theory. Most of it tastes the same to me. Has kind of a chef boy-ar-dee like flavor to me - all of them.
Side note - I also tried the frozen mussaman thai curry. Inedible.

I've had one of these in my freezer for months. Now I think I may never eat it...

The curried lentils with rice is amazingly delicious (for frozen food). So good that when I nuked it in the work microwave, several people asked "what *is* that"? It smells great and tastes even better.

I picked up the paneer w /spinach rice. Will report back.

I just read a 5 star review on the paneer dinner, so I think you will be in a for a treat!

I like their frozen naan too. I only wish we had a TJs closer, I think we would eat it every day if we did!

was the review on I read that one and I'm checking for it on my next TJ run.

I second the Butter Chicken (just had it for lunch) and the Paneer Tikka Masala --it is awesome, just wish it contained more paneer. I also like the frozen garlic naan, but NOT the fresh naan in the bread section. There other indian frozen entrees are very good too. I'm referring to the ones in rectangular boxes, not the round ones.

I finally got to try the Paneer Tikka Masala:

Agree that it needs more paneer.

          2. re: hungryann

I've had the curried lentils and chicken tikka masala; both were winners (along with the butter chicken, which I just tried yesterday).

          3. DH takes the butter chicken & paneer tikka masala for work lunch now & then. They are both very tasty; good for them for revamping their Indian frozen food offerings.

            1. I actually know the guy who makes most of the Indian products (the one's made in Canada) and I can definitely vouch for his authentic recipes. He's also very particular about quality and really does a good job in all the product categories he's in.

              1. I notice they now have a butter chicked in the refrigerated section as well as the frozen one refered to. Anyone try this refrigerated one? Ant comments?
