Mama's Curry on E. Brokaw in SJ

Judith Feb 21, 2009 04:47 PM

The Merc has coupons with significant discounts for this place so we dropped in two nights ago to check it out. We had goat curry, tandoori chicken and aloo gobi. Most of the food was basically unexciting, but the portions were ample, it was incredibly inexpensive, and the aloo gobi was wonderful . . . the cauliflower was really fresh and cooked to perfection. We also had onion kulcha and it was the best I've ever had.

It is NOT a place to go for ambience. It looks like it might have been some kind of big chain fast food place that went out of business. There's a nominal attempt at decor and mercifully absolutely no music, but you wouldn't want to spend a lot of time there. Styrofoam plates and plastic forks. Also there's no beer or wine, although they do have lassi and chai. So we're thinking it could be great for take-out, especially if we can figure out which other things they make as well as the aloo gobi.

The coupons are in the Merc Eye section, if you're so inclined.

First time to Mama's Curry, SJ. Restaurant address on their ad shows: 1704 E. Brokaw Rd, SJ, CA 95131. Cross street: Old Oakland Rd in the North Park Plaza shopping center where PW Market is. They are next to Jamba Juice.

When you go in look at the food that's out on the steam tray, but don't order here. Pick what you want in your head, then go to the Order Here where the cashier is.

I recommend if it's for 1-2 people just get the rice & 1-3 curries ($6.99 veg combo; $7.99 meat combo). Each curry is 12 oz of food which is plenty for 1-2 servings. So you should know from looking at the food what you want or take your chances.

      We ordered way too much:

      chicken tikka masa
      eggplant curry
      spinach & cheese curry
      mutton (goat) curry
      spicy chicken
      channa masala
      tandoori chicken - a la carte $9.49
      Garlic naan - extra $1.25

Rice you can pick either steamed White rice or Tamarind Rice. I think Tamarind rice is better.

Wait for your food or they will tell you to pick it up.

Mango lassi - pre-poured & ready to drink. Pay & grab one near the register.

There's a soda fountain to help yourself if you bought a drink. Plastic forks & spoons available.

Our total was about $27 with a 40% off coupon (recent coupons only 35% off). We have lots of leftovers.

      Separate bathrooms in the back.

food was fine & worth trying, prices are low + better w/ coupon.

          chicken tikka masala - good
          eggplant curry - good, spicy
spinach & cheese curry - I only ate the spinach which was fine
          mutton (goat) curry - fine
          spicy chicken - ok
          channa masala - can't remember
          tandoori chicken - a la carte $9.49 - dry
          Garlic naan - extra $1.25 - good
