South Indian Vegetarian (downtown)

Hey chowhounders,

I'm looking for a downtown location that serves south indian vegetarian cuisine that is authentic and frugal! I'm having my wedding ceremony downtown but planning of moving my guests (approx 150) to a restaurant after the ceremony hat serves south indian veg food, preferably buffet style.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try Annapurna on Dupont and Bathurst. I don't think they can do a buffet though because the place is very small.
Also try Biryani House on Yonge and Wellesley .They used to do occasional South Indian buffet specials

Udupi Palace is the best veggie indian food in the city...not really in the downtown core though. It's on Gerard in little india. It can fit your guests.

I have been to Udupi many times. They can set up a buffet on the side and it is big. Not sure if they close for private parties though. Damn tasty!

thanks - I emailed the owner but he wasn't very receptive to that idea, I even said it was okay if it wasn't a private area if I could still make a large reservation.......

i guess I'm going to have to keep on looking:(

Any thoughts about the Host on Prince Arthur? It isn't large but perhaps they could provide you with a suggestion regarding catering?

Most downtown Indian restaurants are small. What are your thoughts about renting a spot and then bringing in a caterer?

Since its downtown I didn't want to pay a riduclous price for renting out a venue! That was my only problem
