A Week in Jersey.....Need Food

I am in New Jersey all next week 2/23. I am staying in the Newark area. I am looking for good local places to eat within an hours drive of Newark. Things I am looking to chow down on:

Italian
Pizza
Seafood
Sandwiches
Burgers and Dogs
Anything else local I can't get anyplace else........

Help a brother out, and let it rip with suggestions. I love all kinds of food and want the best of the best.

You really must go to Je's for soul food.

Charlie's in Kenilworth for Italian style hot dogs, and Spiritos for ravioli in Elizabeth. I haven't been to either in awhile, but I can't imagine them slipping in quality.

Both are excellent. Charlie's was sold recently. The quality did slip as the previous owner was hardly there while looking to pursue other interests. The place was sold and quality was inconsistent. The last few times my sandwich was made by the new owner and was as good as it used to be. Which is as good as an Italian Hot Dog gets. Tommy's in Elizabeth and Jimmy Buff's completes the Holy Trinity of Italian Hot Dogs.

Spirito's is my favorite place for ravioli and veal cutlets.

I would go to the Belmont Tavern in Bloomfield for a little slice of old-school north jersey. Italian.

If you are in Newark you are sitting right in the middle of some of the best Portuguese and Brazilian food around.
Get down to Ferry Street and take your pick
          Seabra's Marisquiera.
          Seabra's Rodizio.
          Forno's of Spain.
          Adega Grill
          Boi na Brasa.
All good and also a good value. And for what it's worth....Welcome to New Jersey.

            Pizza:

            Spirito's or Santillo's. Elizabeth
            StarTavern, Orange

            http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/524859

            Seafood:

            The Manor, West Orange
            Sebra's Marisqueira, Newark
            Komogashi, Jersey City

            Sandwiches:

A Taylor Ham and Egg on a Hard Buttered Roll can be purchased in almost any deli, luncheonette or diner that serves breakfast.

For Pastrami, Corned Beef or Brisket....

            Cooper's Deli and Market

            For a Cubano....
Anywhere along Bergenline Avenue, West New York or Union City

            For Soul Food/BBQ

            Neva's Restaurant and Deli, Newark

Newark also has the Ironbound Section on Ferry Street for Rodizio, Seafoods and Lobsters. There are references in the above links and within the threads. Places like Forno's, Brasilia and Casa Vasca. New Brunswick is an option, but for me it's not worth the drive and the parking issues.

all these are moderate to inexpensive suggestions.....no fine dining, with the exception of The Manor......where you have to wear a jacket for the All You Can Eat Lobster Buffet.

Are they still there?.I love that place, drove there during the big Snowstorm of 96 or 97, can't remember and it was like we were invited to some private party, Home cooking and wine flowing, singing, Turns out that every big snowstorm they have a party to celebrate and I thing we paid maybe $25.00 and took home a doggy bag the older waitress insisted we take home.

                CM,

I was probably there that same night. I got stuck out on the road, didn't have a paper dollar on me...they didn't take credit cards. and i had over two thousand dollars in coins in my car.....I walked up to the door without a footprint in sight and the snow up to my knee caps.......inside was packed and I had to wait for a table. I know I related this story before on this site.

BTW.....how did your cooking career turn out....did you ever end up picking a school?
