Tarzana help

My wife and I will be attending birthing classes at Tarzana Medical Center over the next four Wednesday nights . . . we are already tired of Mort's Deli (location was great. The food; however, left much to be desired) and aren't big fans of the Hummus Bar. Can anyone offer up some suggestions for nearby, tasty, early dinner spots? Thanks in advance.

        1. I really like Hook'd on Fish. It's in the Encino Town Center, On Ventura Blvd, south side, just east of Louise.

            1. Chili My Soul in Encino.
              Alcazar in Encino.
              Madeleine Bistro in Tarzana.
              Kate Mantilini in Woodland Hills.
Ameci Pizza & Pasta - all over.

                1. We took all those classes and then lived in the anti-partum high risk unit for 61/2 weeks. The Gelsons Market on Reseda Blvd. was a life saver, especially for their salad bar and La Brea Bread, sushi for dad only and other stuff within walking distance of the hospital!

                    1. Sushi Iki has the best and freshest sushi in town.

I'm not sure that's a great recommendation since the OP's wife is pregnant, but it is excellent -- and pricey sushi.

For cheaper sushi and non-traditional rolls, Cho Cho San on Ventura near Vanalden is good. In the same strip mall is a decent Indian restaurant.

Melody's and Las Fuentes north on Reseda are good bets for Mexican.

Le Sanglier for old-school French is on Crebs, just south of Ventura.

Fab Hot Dogs on Tampa has great hot dogs. it is another hole in the wal.

In addition to Alcazar and Chili My Soul in Encino, consider Thai 'n' I on Ventura between Encino and White Oak. It's a definite hole-in-the-wall, but the chicken and ribs are fantastic. (Stick to those dishes and have them in combo with the pad thai and/or mee krob.) There also is a branch of The Stand at Ventura and Balboa for hot dogs, salads, etc. (The hot dogs are definitely better at Fab, but The Stand has a better sit-down atmosphere.)

For deli in the vicinity, I would recommend Fromin's in Encino's over Mort's. If you are committed to staying close, Frankie's, the Italian restaurant in the center with the Gelson's, is a decent, red-sauce Italian place. Nothing particularly outstanding, but it's better than Mort's.

Taj Mahal in Encino for Indian is another option. It has its detractors on this board, but I have always had good service and enjoyed the food.

                      2. Larsens Steakhouse opens at 5:00 for dinner. I love their Filet, but they serve all cuts and also offer chicken, fish, and lamb.

                          1. Sol y Luna. Nice mexican restuarant west on Ventura across from the Corbin Bowl.

                              1. There is also a new Zankou around corbin/ventura.

                                  1. I agree with the reader who recommended Taj Mahal in Encino. If you like Indian food, this is a terrific spot.
