Wally's Pub-Gainey Ranch (2nd location)- Scottsdale

Running errands yesterday we were looking for a place to watch the UA/UCLA Basketball game. Not wanting the usual Zipps, Goldies...etc. We decided to stop into Wally's on Via De Ventura. (The same strip center as Un Bacio in the old News Cafe spot)
As soon as we stepped inside we knew we had a 'Winner'! The place is remiscent of an British Pub, lots of dark wood, black and white tiles floors. It was really cute.
I noticed a very nice wine selection when we walked in which is well displayed......
They have flat screen tv's in the bar area...it was a perfect spot to watch a game.

The menu is pretty straight forward....soups, sandwiches, salads, burgers, pastas.....fresh seafood and steaks.

We shared a huge Caesar Salad which was crisp, fresh and perfectly dressed w/ a hint of anchovy. A french onion soup which was piping hot and very cheesy. It was browned just the way I like it. We also shared a Bacon cheese burger which was also quite large...served w/ sweet potato and regular fries.

I would like to go back for dinner.....last nights special was a lamb loin.

I've driven past that little mall tons of times and always wondered if there was anything interesting tucked in there. I'll have to check it out some time.

I work right there in the office complex behind Wally's so I eat there whenever I don't have time to venture out to for something else and its enjoyable every time. Just this last week I had the bacon and 3 cheese penne with artichoke hearts and it was nothing short of decadent (although a lousy selection for lunch since I was falling asleep at my desk the rest of the afternoon). I love their cuban sandwich even though its not an authentic replica of something you'd get on the east coast its still very respectable.

One other thing to note...that location is cursed. I've worked there going on 8 years now and nothing before Wally's has thrived in that spot and it hasn't been unusual to see it empty for over a year before another venture gave it a shot. I don't think News Cafe even lasted a year. Wally's has been consistently busy (if not packed with a wait) every time I've gone so that should say something. I hope they stick it out.

Totally cursed spot. Hopefully, he can break the curse. I second the Cuban, I get it everytime, its just a great lunch sandwich.

I agree that the food at Wally's is quite good, especially a lunch consisting of the Chop Salad, and that the ambiance is quite pleasant as well since both the Scottsdale as well as the Phoenix locations have outdoor patios. The prices are fair as well.

Considering that Wally's timing for expansion was dicey at best in the economic tsunami we call Phoenix, I was apprehensive about their success. Not to worry on that score. Build a better mousetrap. . . etc.

But the service at the Scottsdale location leaves a great deal to be desired. On two occasions, at 5 PM on a Friday, which is well ahead of the dinner rush, it took 45 minutes to get our meal. The first time, we ordered appetizers, no excuse there. The second time the waitress admitted that she forgot to put in the order! Like she didn't notice we were sitting there without food?

Which leads me to my curmudgeonly policy: The 30-Minute Rule. This states that if some portion of the meal has not arrived in 30 minutes, we leave.

They have a killer steak sandwich. In the words of "Fletch"...."I'll have a steak sandwich. And a steak sandwich."

I meant to respond to this post weeks ago but forgot! I've dined at Wally's twice in the past month with my family and we've all loved everything we've ordered. I've ordered the same thing both times because it was SO good. I got the Philly Cheesesteak (or whatever they call their version). It's so juicy and tender and way better than the Philadelphia Cheesesteak company's version! Granted, I've only tried cheese steak a few times in my life and those are the only versions but Wally's is definitely fresh and it reheats very well in a toaster oven the next day! Other things ordered were the specials (short ribs one night, chicken and dumplings another) and both got great reviews. The burgers are also great.

The only thing I disliked was the fries...it comes with a mixture of regular, sweet potato, and two onion rings. I usually love spfs, but these were soggy and pretty gross. The regular were just eh, and the onion rings I actually had to spit out because they were horrendous. The next time I ordered I subbed a side salad and all was well!

I highly recommend this place. I've only been to the location on Doubletree, but I assume both would be equally great.

The original Wally's is a great place (Camelback and 44th st.) You really can't go wrong with anything on this menu. Thx for the review.
