Kean Coffee Tustin: mid-March

Just came back from the Newport Back Bay Kean Coffee with news that the Tustin shop, at Newport and Main in the original location of Diedrich Coffee, will be open mid-March. I can't wait, because it's definitely the best coffee I've had in OC, but Newport is far from Anaheim for a cuppa joe!

  1. Great news. Thanks for the update, DU.

    1. Is the Kean Coffee in Malibu -- in the former Diedrich location -- still there?
I have been meaning to try it; thanks for the reminder.

I think it has become a (big surprise) CharBuks - BLAH!

      2. The original location is in Costa Mesa on 17th Street. Dietrick can be found there. Still serving excellent coffee, roasting it to perfection, and importing great beans.

It's actually technically in Newport Beach, where 17th turns into Westcliff, at Irvine Ave. Twenty feet from Costa Mesa, but the address is Newport Beach.

        2. This is great news ! They're going to be competing with The Lost Bean, on Newport and Irvine Blvd., which is a bit of a shame since I'd like to see as many independents thrive as possible. I hope that they both develop and maintain a loyal following (Lost Bean seems to be doing pretty well, so far).

I like The Lost Bean, but I don't think they are up to the level of Kean in terms of pulling consistently excellent shots etc.and they're roasting / sourcing.

I like Lost Bean but you go there for interesting drinks... and to Kean (sorry, Kéan) for great traditional coffee drinks. It's like the difference between Nozawa and Tokyo Delves, except Martin Diedrich isn't a jerk like certain itamae I could name.

Kean is really good. When we go down to OC for Vietnamese food, we often take a side trip to NB for coffee. That's a long side trip. Going to Tustin is much better. I remember going to Diedrich there when they first opened. After they sold, it really went downhill.

Kean has some interesting drinks. I had a coffee with cardamon that was not bad. I do agree that their strength is with the traditional coffee.

          2. They're open in Tustin !

Soft opening was yesterday - they were serving coffee but hadn't gotten the pastries yet (BTW, these will be from Pacific Whey bakery, just like at the NB/Costa Mesa location). Today they will be in full swing !

I went this morning, actually. Coffee was excellent; they sold the pastry I wanted out from under me (I ordered it and paid for it but someone else was quicker to the punch).

It didn't take any longer than the NPB location but it seemed a little more... frazzled, a lot of "no, go over THERE and get the beans I need".

I think with a few days' practice you won't be able to tell the difference between the two -- except that the Tustin one has better parking.
