Knife shopping

I need a new knife! (Not really, but I do really want one.) I've been drooling over some the Japanese knives like Misono, Glestain, etc. and want to play with them before buying. Are there any places in the Boston area that would have these or do I need to go to NYC? I've tried Kitchen Arts on Newbury and Sur la Table.

  1. I have no first-hand knowledge of this company, but I've had this bookmark in my browser for a few years now:

This is a company in Pepperell - not Boston, but a lot closer than NYC. The website looks neglected, but they do mention that you can visit in person (by appointment). It might be worth a phone call, if only to see if they're still in business.

    1. You should definitely go to Stoddard's. I've been going there for years and they're extremely knowledgeable and will keep you from buying the wrong knife. And they're cheaper than any other kitchen store (10% discount for chefs). They used to have a location between Park St. and Downtown Crossing, down one of those side streets (Bromfield?), and they might have moved back there. They also had a shop in the Copley mall. Their website says they're relocating and has a phone number ( Also, online you can look at Professional Cutlery Direct ( Japanese woodworking sites are the best place to find Japanese kitchen knives. They have incredible sushi knives that you can't get anywhere else but Japan or online. Just google Japanese woodworking tools. Good luck!

      1. I'm going to throw in a suggestion for Henckel's Cermax, available at JB Prince. They're made in Japan to Japanese specs and they're super sharp:

This is my top knife, but there's no place to go give it a test drive as far as I know.
