The Hen House Wings 'n Waffles

Came across this place last night and I'm totally perplexed yet fascinated. Really, waffles, butter, syrup, fried chicken, and any number of hot/bbq/asian/buffallo sauces all on one plate? How is this place? Any specific combination recommendations, as well as side dish recommendations?

  1. Lots of posts about this place. Just do a board search. My read is the chicken is good, the waffles are mediocre, and one should stick to the basics.

Gosh, I'm sorry. I swear, the search engine on this site isn't the best.

Oh, no big deal. I agree the search engine takes some tweaking. There is a super chicken and waffles song on Youtube, the funniest line of which is "the waffle guides the chicken to the stomach like a sherpa."

I agree, skip all the sauces and just stick to the basic fried chicken (which they do a solid job with). I would rate the waffle as decent. Overall its a good fix, especially for someone as myself that spent alot of time in the south.

If you want an even better version though, try the offering at Lucky's in Fort Point. Their version is bang on and both the Fried Chicken and the waffle are delicious, especially when topped with the lavender scotch bonnet maple syrup.

      3. Chicken and waffles is one of the legendary soul food combinations. Supposedly, it was popularized by jazz musicians in the '40s: when you don't get off work until 4 in the morning, you don't know if you want dinner or breakfast!

Ignore the sauces (and in my experience, the sides) and just get the chicken and waffle. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, myself. Also, some of the absolute worst counter service I have ever had.

        1. Poppa B's in Dorchester has great soul food, including chicken and waffles (which I havent had) and ham steak, which I have and its delicious. The service is super friendly, not fast, but what do I got to do thats so special on a Sunday afternoon.
