Best Cakes/Cupcakes/Pastries in LA

I'm taking a good friend out for a birthday sweet at the end of the month. He loves his sweets, I love good coffee and tea. I thought about Lark and Jin, but does anyone else have any ideas?

Two lesser known spots are L.A. Baking Co. on Broadway in Lincoln Heights right next to the I-5 Freeway. Also, Amy's in Montebello. L.A. Baking is more about ordered cakes, but Amy's has the best pastries in the SGV.

Ditto on Chantilly. But note the hours...they close pretty early (7?). I'd go there much more often if they were open later.

LA Mill is a nice space and the coffees are amazing...in several styles: Clover, Drip, Vacuum. Their desserts look pretty. LA Mill is a very visual experience!

Auntie Em's is more casual than LA Mill, although LA Mill is very friendly, warm and inviting. I just don't love the space at Auntie Em's. The desserts at Auntie Em's are delicious...go for the cupcakes. But Auntie Em's will not be a coffee experience to remember, while LA Mill will. Also, LA Mill is a pleasant place to pass the afternoon or evening with a good friend.

love auntie em's but it's a crap shoot. if you go there later in the afternoon they're usually sold out of most of their cupcakes. i would go to amandine.
