Bogus Recipes

cuccubear Feb 10, 2009 10:00 AM

From time to time, and seemingly more frequent lately, I notice bogus recipes on the home page. Toady for example, there are two -

jkjkjjkjhj by goden213 and
fggjhhjh by lopeessss.

I figure they were put there by "cyber punks" or whatever you want to call them, but is there a way to report them, or do they stay on Chow, taking space on the site? Do you want serious chowhounders to alert you to them, or do you sift through and delete them on your own?

  1. Jacquilynne Feb 10, 2009 10:56 AM

Hi, we're pretty on top of them -- they just appear very rapidly and we have to remove them manually. If you see a new batch and want to alert us to one of them, just to make sure we've seen it, that'd be fine, but there's no need for you to take the time to go through and report all of them. Thanks for asking and helping out.

There are a whole bunch there today. Odd. Why do some people think that kind of thing is fun or funny? I feel bad that the ChowTeam has to waste their energy on this sort of thing.

I know what you mean. Personally, when I waste time, it's doing something I enjoy, not something that brings hardship and misery to others.

I would liken that sort of behavior to the crank phone call of twenty years ago.

Holy mackerel, look at all the bogus recipes coming through here today...Are the schools out or something? I usually ignore them, but there have been so many today! Would love to get my hands on these knuckleheads and force feed them a Durian-Limberger-Ramp souffle!

Spring break for the kiddies. I guess they have nothing better to do.

This has been happening for 4-5 months. Some days worse than others

And recently the recipe spam has been TERRIBLE! They've blasted the site and then we've barred them, and implemented barriers. Then they come back. We're doing our best to keep them away for good but man, they're horrible. Our poor engineers, who as you know have a lot of other things to deal with.

I completely understand. Just thought I would pass on it's been happening. But other more pressing issues by far. I have enough problems just getting work and my home PC's from crashing and spams. I feel for you guys.

Recipe spam - as in people copying/pasting recipes word-for-word from other sites (ingredients AND directions)?

There is definitely someone in particular who's looking to fill up the Recipe boards with whatever he can find elsewhere. A lot of times, the way he's copying recipes into the ingredients section comes up complete gobbledegook - or no ingredients whatsoever. Which means the recipe is useless with just directions.

I've mentioned this in another thread I started, but it seems that nothing is being done about it.

I am relatively the "new kid on the block" so as to say ( I just signed up today). So you can well imagine my surprise when I clicked on "Cayetano" thinking it was a new condiment or recipie that I might be interested in (I didn't even bother openng "Glitter, "meat of a girl" or "voluntown"). If I wanted to see porn or suggestive material there are other sites out there I can go to. Perhaps, you could put a Report link that would better help you identify these miscreants. Based on this, I'm almost afraid to click on any other link for fear of what it may reveal or even share this site with others.

There is a Report link, it's just really not obvious. It's on the left side in the shaded column, under SAVE and HACK - it's just a small-type word in black, but you can click on it.

Almost every "recipe" on pages 1 to 6 of the member recipes is spam.

That's exactly what I've been saying - anything from matthardy0321 is copied/pasted from other websites. He's just filling it up.

If we're not allowed to copy/paste exactly as it's appeared elsewhere because of copyright issues, why is he being allowed to do so? And often, much of his copy/pastes aren't even going in properly - so ingredients don't get listed, and the "instructions" are a complete waste.

This poster may be the test for all the spam being posted on recipes. It's pretty evident he/she is using an automated submission system.

But what's the point? What are these knuckleheads getting out of it?

If it's a prank, okay, I get it, move on...but for crying out loud, are they working towards some ultimate goal, like over-loading the server for some kind of cyber meltdown?

Just noticed a whole bunch of new bogus recipes this a.m. I'm still not getting why people do this. Ugh.

They are spammers, they're trying to drive traffic to their sites or increase their google rankings.

They're kids. Teens. Bored at school or when they're home. They think it's "fun".

ETA: When I went to report via EMail to the Mods, they had majikly disappeared! :-)

Thanks, Linda & Jacquilynne. I clicked on one recipe and hit the report button on it. Hopefully that way the Powers That Be see all of them. Then I posted here too, just in case.

I like that they get "disappeared" ... just be sure to leave the canoli! :)

In addition to the bogus recipes, I keep seeing a bunch of bogus lists from "TodRels" on the right hand side of the screen under RECENTLY ADDED LISTS. And I e-mailed The Chowhound Team last night...so I think this user just keeps making new lists. Why not just delete the user ID and stop the madness?

Bunch more bogus recipes today. I tried clicking on one so that I could get to a "report" button; but it sent me to some other non-chow page. I won't be clicking on them again. Too bad there's no other way to "report".

But you can report them - clicking the "recipe" brings you to the bogus recipe page (unless it's already been removed), and then the report button in the upper-left hand corner.

I know there's a report button on the recipe page; that's why I clicked on it. But it doesn't take you to the recipe page -- it took me somewhere else entirely. It didn't even look like an ordinary "this page has been removed" place either. So I won't be clicking on them again.

Oh that's strange! I clicked on recipes from BOTH bogus people posting there now, got to their "recipe" and was able to report both of them.
