Charo Chicken in Plano (Coit, between Park and Parker) has been one of my favorite places to eat for a year or two. I try to go there at least once a week. It's amazing; anyone who knows El Pollo Loco; Charo puts them to shame.
I'm now very worried about their future...
Just like most of the California transplants that just can't seem to make it in Texas (anyone remember what happened to Baja Fresh?), as time passes, Charo has seemed to be ever the more sparse in it's clientele; every time I go there, it seems to be more and more empty.
I recently pulled up their listings on charochicken.com. Plano Texas is no longer even listed on the website (it was at one time previously)...all it shows are their California locations now. It was still there as of a few weeks ago, but now I'm really getting scared.
Anyone heard anything? I'll just die without their hot garlic salsa!
jase. i myself have noticed the same. There is no link on their site mentioning plano, i had to do a google search on them to find it. I also noticed that in QSR magazine it mentioned that 12 openings would take place in the DFW area but i have yet to see that happen. Any thoughts on why they seem to be going under? Cant go wrong with chicken now can you?
Can't speak for Dallas, so don't know why it hasn't caught on there. Interesting question to ponder, though. I've just moved to Houston and although I haven't done an exhaustive search, I've seen, and eaten at several 'Pollo Loco' style spots. But Houston has a much larger Hispanic population, I think, than Dallas. Maybe the idea of what seems to be plain chicken doesn't sound appealing enough for folks that have had no experience with it to want to give it a try.
I've been frequenting this restaurant since Guidelive first mentioned them... Danny and his sister have been battling to keep the doors open from day one. The natives just don't seem to get the attraction of Mexican-style chicken. Their location in Plano may work against them. If they were on Preston near Stonebriar Mall, the Cali transplants (like us) would flock to them.
