Three Tarts Bakery
I'm surprised there isn't much talk on the boards about Three Tarts Bakery in Chelsea on 9th Ave, not too far from the Chelsea Market. They have a lot of tiny desserts and cookies. So you can sample tons of different things without getting too full. Some of my favorites are the cardamom cookies filled with apricot, espresso gelee and almond panna cotta, espresso chocolate tart and pine nut tart. Added bonus: people behind the counter are always so nice. Will warn you that prices aren't super cheap consider the size.

re: Peter Cuce
If you're averse to super-sweet desserts (which I am as well -- not the biggest fan of Momofuku Milk Bar desserts), I think you'll like the cardamom apricot and their version of oreos. I would probably stay away from the chocolate hazelnut ones as they are a bit on the sweet side (though I liked them).

Yes, it's a very cool place. The sheer variety of items is impressive! I like the parfaits, the Pomegranate Jewel, and the Lovelies (pretty much everything I've tried there). I did a comic about them here:

They could use more seating, but it is a very cool place where you can gift shop and enjoy treats.
