Buying Cooked Prawns/Shrimp?

cakelush Feb 9, 2009 08:53 AM

I lived in England a few years ago and was obsessed with cooked, shell-on prawns from Sainsbury's. I've never been able to find a similar product here - any suggestions? I live in Brooklyn, but am willing to travel to (almost) any borough.

Here's the Sainsbury product: http://www.sainsburys.com/groceries/i...

Thank you!

all the prawns in that link - and on the Sainsbury site - are peeled, as far as I can tell...

No, you are mistaken - they are "Lyons Whole Shell-On Prawns, 250g"

the description on that link reads:
"Individually Quick Frozen Cooked & Peeled Prawns in a Protective Ice Glaze" and the photo clearly shows peeled prawns inside the bag.

anyway, i was just trying to get a sense of what they're like to see if i could make a recommendation for you. unfortunately i think the closest i've seen anywhere have only been tail-on, not completely unpeeled. you might want to try calling around to a few of the Manhattan locations of WFM to find out if they carry them.

sorry - the link was available only to me apparently, due to cookies or whatever.

          thanks for your help.

There are lots of places to buy raw prawns complete with shell and head (Chinatown comes immediately to mind). Is there a reason you're reluctant to cook them yourself, or is this product special in some other way?

I can't stand it when people tell me to cook something myself when I've asked where to buy it, so apologies in advance if I'm annoying you just by asking the question!

I know Wild Edible at Grand Central has shelled on shrimps (without heads) in different flavors. I actually haven't tried them so I can't attest to the test. Whole Foods has cooked shrimps with shells, again in different flavors, but please don't buy those. They were horrible.

These are so impossible to find on this side of the pond if you mean the coldwater/ greenland prawns. Please let me know if you find any
