Leg of the Beast dinner at Incanto
Mrs. Wineguy and I, as well as our friends E, K, M and S descended upon Incanto Saturday night for our reserved Leg of the Beast Dinner. It is, according to Incanto’s website, “For groups of 6-8 persons, who are also interested in a hunk of meat, reserve a whole beef shank with all of its components (including marrow bone & tendon). One week's notice is required. Cost is $200 for the entree "Leg of Beast" course. This excludes appetizers, desserts, beverages, tax, & gratuity.” We thoroughly loved the dinner.
We started with a very floral 2006 Chambave Muscat from the Vallee d’Aoste. Very high toned, crisp, minerally and bone dry. It seemed to go well with everybody’s first courses. A couple of people had the Lamb Heart, a couple had the Pork Liver, and there was a Baccala as well as a dressed broccoli at the table. I think that if I were to do this dinner again, I would order a salad or pasta as a first course.
The wine we had with the main attraction was a 2001 Fanetti Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which was earthy and deep with bright fruit. It was great with the beef.
The leg and its accompaniments are pictured in the photos I’ve uploaded. The beans were deeply flavorful. The Treviso was a bitter foil for the richness of the meal. The toasts, along with the mustard and horseradish made a decadent marrow crostini. The meat of the leg needed no knife to be removed-it just was fall off the bone tender and richly flavored. The gravy in the pitcher was just gilding the lily.
Most of us wanted dessert, even though we were all full. I had a grapefruit sorbetto that was, for me, an absolutely perfect way to finish this very memorable meal.
Service, as always, was top-notch.
