20th b-day celebration near U of Penn

i am looking for a fun atmosphere, moderately priced place i can take about 12 people to to celebrate my daughter's 20th birthday. This will be on Valentine's Day do we need to stay away from the formal seated dinners... any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

  1. Distrito has superb refined Mexican food (Chef Garces I adore you) in a colorful, raucous (in a good way) big place with a happening bar. Really fun for 20 year olds and you too. Check out the menu online.

I don't know if I would consider Distrito "moderately priced" unless you want everyone to leave hungry. Then again, with a 20 and under crowd, you won't splurge on the booze, so that will save you some dough. It was the first place I thought of as well.

But Valentine's Day is going to be a killer. Mad Mex may be in your budget and bookable for the 14th. You could order a bunch of food to share and take over the lower level or the west room.

    2. if you have to go on valentine's day i would go ethnic. dahlak et al, nan, new delhi et al....they will also be more afforable than the other options.

      1. I was pleasantly surprised to have a lovely dinner for two at Distrito and walk away only minus 60$ (including tip!). Yes, we had beer instead of goofy shishi drinks but I still walked away feeling sated and very happy (rabbit mole highly recommended).
However, to second mazza's advice, if she is an adventurous eater there is an eclectic collection of local African eateries (a cuisine that is geared for sharing) that would be very affordable for a group. My personal favorites are Kaffa Crossing at 44th & Chestnut or Abyssinia at 45 & Pine.
