I have been to both in the past and enjoyed them both in different ways, but wanted to know if any had been to either recently and which one you would suggest for a bday dinner for 6?

I prefer Perilla for it's consistently good food and service, however Centro Vino may be better for a group since it has small plates etc. Centro can get very loud and cramped though.

In another thread, a couple of reviewers (including me) said that Centro vinoteca had gone downhill in the past year. I went in January of last year and loved it. I went back in July and did not find the food all that good. The restaurant was also empty on a Thursday night which is usually busy so I guess that the place has been going down recently.

I have not been to CV, largely due to mixed reviews, but have been to Perilla many times, including just last week, and have always left very happy.

if between centro and perilla, definately perilla. if you are in that hood, there's actually a number of good places. perilla, the little owl, spotted pig, dell'anima, elettaria, bar blanc... depends on what you're looking for.
