I just finished reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, and I was intrigued by Pollan's description of Polyface Farm just outside Charlottesville, VA.

Has anyone ever been to the farm to purchase chickens, eggs, vegetables, etc.? I know they're not open now, but I'd definitely like to make the trip once Spring and Summer roll around. Their website says something about appointments during the week and just being open on Saturdays.

Can someone who's been to the farm to purchase food fill me in on the details? When do I need to go? Do I need an appointment? Do they run out of chickens and eggs quickly? Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi aburkavage,
We have been to the farm. I think they are still open now, no? Saturdays are the best day. It's hard to find, so a GPS would be helpful. I think they have a pretty steady supply of all things-- eggs included. All the meat is frozen. You just basically drive up to this sort of nondescript white building behind what I believe is the Salatin home and go on in. When we went Joel was there to sell us our items. We got one of his three final turkeys of the season and had it for Christmas. It was great. The only product we didn't care much for is the Italian sausage. I don't think rural Virginia is the place to find well-spiced Italian sausage. But the breakfast links are great. I haven't yet made my chicken, but I'm sure it will be great. They sometimes have Polyface eggs at Foods of All Nations in Charlottesville if you live in the area. And as long as you're in Staunton, you might try hitting up Giancarlo's bakery. Great Italian pastries made in a kitchen attached to his home.
