Looking for good BBQ in or near Western Mass

Has anyone tried Famous Dave's BBQ in Springfield? I've never heard of the chain and normally don't like chains, but if they have good BBQ , I'm in! I like Bub's okay but I usually only get the pulled pork sandwich. Have also tried the Putney, VT place, which is okay but also not great. I never liked the place in Easthampton, which is gone now - just remembered the name - Smokin' Lil's.

If anyone knows of a good BBQ place or has tried Famous Dave's I would love to hear about it.

  1. The best 'Q in the general Pioneer Valley area is Top of the Hill Grill in Brattleboro, Vt. Since the sad demise of Holy Smokes nothing else comes close. Certainly not Bub's, Famous Dave's nor Curtis', the one in Putney, IMO http://www.topofthehillgrill.com/home/

Try BT Smokehouse, located about 5 minutes off the Sturbridge exit on the Mass Pike.

    2. I'm not quite sure how Theodores in downtown Springfield hasn't been mentioned yet! They have some of the absolute best bbq in Western Mass. Their signature sauce is the bourbon sauce which they make in house. http://www.theobbq.com

Booze, Blues, BBQ and don't forget Smith's Billiards just upstairs. Same great food, but a large poolhall. Its the oldest operating pool hall in the country.

Oh and I did go to Famous Daves the other day. It wasn't bad and was nice to have a new restaurant in the area, but it is still a chain and didn't compete with Theodores even a little bit. The portions were stingy and the ribs kinda fatty (St Louis style Im told) They had 5 kinds of sauce on the table which was interesting but they cook the food with the main one. We weren't given a choice. Would you really want to mix them? I will go back for sure, but I won't go out of my way to head there.

I've never been to Theodore's at night, but it's a nice spot for a quick burger or pulled pork sandwich at lunchtime. Speedy service, reasonable prices.

Theodore's looks and sounds like my kind of place! AND I had never heard of it. Thanks!

        2. Route 7 Grille in Great Barrington south for farm to table freshness. Great pork, and beef locally raised. Also Black eye Sals in Hartford.

          1. I second blues, booze & bbq--nothing compares to the ribs & bbq in Chicago, but for Western Ma, not bad.

Famous Dave's is a huge coast-to-coast BBQ chain (38 states and counting..). Not bad if you like formula Q in a formula atmosphere with formula portions. And it's headquartered in that BBQ mecca of the world, Minnesota. Ha. Welcome to Springfield, Dave's. Crapo-chain capital of New England dining.
