I'm planning a casual affordable catch-up dinner with a girlfriend on Friday and am looking for a great restaurant where we can have an impressive meal that's less expensive than the dining room. Below Midtown is preferred, but we're flexible. Any suggestions?

Go to a tapas place that are so abundant in the city instead like Boqueria, Alta, Pipa.

Or a casual great food place like Spotted Pig for an amazing burger.

Pipa was great! But I went for a catch up dinner with a girlfriend there as well and it was a bit too crowded on a Saturday night to make it really enjoyable. I loved the food, but we wound up spending more money than "affordable." It was definitely hip and delicious (sangria was some of the best restaurant-made that I have ever had) but wouldn't recommend it for a relaxed evening of talking. It would be great for a date or meet up place before going out to the bars in the area.
