El Paso recommendations?

Hi! I did a search and nothing recent came up. Going to El Paso to meet the Fockers this spring. Anything I absolutely need to check out? I am coming from Brooklyn and my BF is from El Paso but hasn't lived there in about 10-12 years so we are both pretty out of the loop. Trying to stay around $20/person tops and of course we must consume BBQ and Tex-Mex. I also would like to eat some authentic Mexican. I'm sure there's a lot. Please help me weed them out?

Thanks!

El Paso is quite spread out. It's about 30 miles from the nicer west side to the far east suburbs. Following are a few places on the west side. They won't be convenient if you are staying on the east side.

Avila's is voted consistently as best Tex-Mex in El Paso. For some reason Chico's Tacos is a local near cult favorite taco stand. They serve soupy tacos which are dirt cheap. I don't recommend it but it may be worth checking out just to say you've been there.

Barriga's is another non-chain authentic Mexican place.

I'm not a big meat eater but a lot of people recommend Stateline

Get in touch with amysuehere on the Austin board. She's a true chowhound and used to live there.
