Sunnyside Empanadas?
The bakery on Greenpoint and 47th I went to yesterday. They were meh, only offered beef or chicken. I got beef, the crust was a bit gritty and mushy but the beef/potato filling was fine, not much meat in there at all.
I've had mamas empanadas both on greenpoint and at another location and haven't really liked them. I think they're all frozen. Am I missing something?
Sur La Empanada I haven't been to yet. Planning on today or tomorrow unless it gets a real bad review. Do they have anything else there, like soup so I can make a meal out of it.
I know there are other places, any recs greatly appreciated. I'm non the lookout for baked empanadas, but if it's good I'm eating it.
thx

When were you last there? I passed by around mid-December and the storefront was vacant. Hope they found another space somewhere.

oh damn. havent been there since december at least. Other than the empanadas, they werent that skilled at anything. they were passionate, but I questioned why anyone would really get lunch there. that sucks, but the strong survive.

Used to go a lot to El Buen Sabor, on Queens Blvd at 46th st? Same side of the boulevard as the T-Mobile, about a half-block away; lotta good stuff besides empanadas as well (their daily soups, pan de bono, etc.)
Mama's empanadas are all frozen yes.

Definitely agree on El Buen Sabor. Their Columbian style empanadas are better than the nearby specialty empanada shops, and their lunch stuff - especially the very hearty soups - is pretty good too. Not much English spoken, but very nice people.

I'll definitely try that. Any word on Sur La empanada?
Yesterday I went to the "I love PY" bakery on greenpoint near 43rd st. Emps were good, probably would have been alot better if i got there when they were fresh. I also had a strange beef soup with minced ground beef in it, not bad tho i wouldnt get it again. There's more about this place here: http://shaunaeatssunnyside.tumblr.com....

Sur has a website here: http://www.surtogo.com/home.html. I went once a month or two ago. They are baked when you order so they're nice and fresh. Not all the varieties are the most authentic, but they're pretty healthy (if that's a virtue) and tasty.
