I noticed a new place on 17ave sw (new for me anyway as I don't get down there that often). It was in the small strip mall at the intersection of 17 ave and 5 st SW in the sme strip as the 7-11 and Papa Johns. I believe there used to be a Vietnamese Resto there previously. I can't remember the name, but I do recal a sign out front for a Roti Ninner Special.

whats the difference?the op asked for a roti place and this is my rec.why nitpick?

I wasn't nitpicking, I was just clarifiying if this was that Jamaican place. They might sell roti but it's not a "roti place" since roti is not Jamaican. If it'd changed hands and was a real trini/guyanese "roti place" then I'd want to know that.

            Relax.

I totally see your point. My partner is trini and I guess some of his stickler status around roti has rubbed off on me. Fact is as you have seen, some Jamaicans make damn good roti; some trinis make damn poor roti too (though not in trinidad!).

agreed on none in trinidad.but last time i checked jamaica and trinadad were both caribbean islands and the op asked for" a good place for caribean roti in Calgary??? Preferably NE"the roti at this place is good, hence my rec.

JM, you would seem to be the go-to guy for this question: Do any of the places mentioned in this thread serve doubles and aloo?

                    tks

Roti Hut definitely has doubles- by aloo do you mean aloo pie? If so, I remember somebody on here mentioning that Organettes had both double and aloo pies but haven't checked it out myself.

I think Roti Hut has aloo pie too.

well the guy who owns the Gondola Pizza on acadia is east indian. i guess it's not authentic midwestern-style thin crust then. dammit.

sorry john, i had to do a ninja edit because I had initially said:

"wow, john, just wow. i think you're the one who needs to relax."

but then I thought that was a bit snarky. so I edited it in the form of an analogy, you know, where roti:jamaican::chicago-style thin crust pizza:east indian

                      see the relevance now, JMan?

                      :P

Those friggin' ninja edits always confuse the uninitiated, be careful with those throwing stars!

Nope. And posting snark 6 months after I already made my peace with howlin just comes off as picking a fight where none is even a tiny bit necessary.

If you want the real thing- as in Trini, not just "caribbean"- then you only choices in Cgy are AFAIK (and my partner is Trini so we do keep up with these things) are at Roti Hut by Marlborough Mall or if you're lucky enough to make it the T&T Organettes Social Club, way up by Deerfoot Mall- AFAIK they only serve food at lunch and that's only 3 or 4 days per week. No idea why but their beef roti is very good and very massive.

If you're willing to deign to get roti at a Jamaican place, Joycee's in Bridgeland (corner of Edm Tr and 1st Ave NE) has a very respectable roti- they serve it in clamshell with the world's worst iceberg lettuce "salad," something both inauthentic and unappetizing, and I really wish they'd stop doing that. But as I say, good roti, in fact I had the best boneless chicken ver I've had in Calgary there.

Joycee's is indeed a very good roti.

T&T Organettes Social Club looks very, very promising. Thanks for the tip!

How sad is it that I googled "AFAIK Calgary" hoping to find the address of a great roti restaurant? Internet slang...

Calgary is light years from TO for sure- but it could be worse- Chicago, which is 9 million people metro, has not one single place for roti.

Roti Hut is great. I went there the other day during business hours, though, and they were closed. I hope it was just a one off & they're still open. Report back if you make it over there.
