Foodandwine Jan 30, 2009 02:15 PM

Hi there,

Im invited to a Super Bowl Party on Sunday. Im making the trip from Manhattan Beach to Sierra Madre on Super Bowl Sunday. 105 E to 110 N to 5 N to 2 E to 134 E.. Okay get out the mapquest. Last time I brought 2 boxes of Beard Papas cream puffs. Any suggestions, Im at a loss. Either sweets or an appetizer any suggestions would be cool..

Do what I intend to do for a Super Bowl party, and get hot wings and fried mozzarella balls at Alondra Hot Wings. The locations in Montebello and Paramount are not too far off your route.

You'll have excellent, well-sauced, if smallish (so get extra) wings, and pizza-dough-wrapped mozzarella balls served with a nice marinara sauce.

Thanks Hounds for all of your recs. Called into Diddy Riese in Westwood and ordered a dozen assorted ice cream sandwiches. They make them the night before and deep freeze them so they will not melt enroute. Im bringing a cooler too. Thought that this would be different on the Desert Table.. And for those of you whom read my route, yup I making a detour as I thought that these were worth the detour..

Good idea. Westwood Diddy Riese still rocks.

The Berries and Cream sheet cake from Lido Bakery on Sepulveda Blvd in Manhattan Beach. The middle layer is filled with cream and strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. A winner ever time.

Bristol Farms, on Rosecrans, before getting on the freeway will have Appetizers or desserts.

That berries & cream cake at Lido is delicious, and very light for a cake. The only problem is, Lido is not open on Sundays. So maybe some other time.

You're going right by Porto's Bakery in Glendale if you don't mind waiting in a long line.
Maybe if you order an appetizer platter ahead it will be ready and waiting?

I second Porto's...but I would go for a dessert tray with cheese rolls, guava cheese rolls, and an assortment of other sweet treats. There's a location in Burbank off the Hollywood Way exit on the 134, too. Might be easier to get to than the Glendale location on Super Bowl Sunday.

Forgot to mention that Yummy Cupcakes is also available in Burbank...I love their red velvet, and I'm sure they have special flavors available for Super Bowl Sunday. Down the street from Porto's Burbank location

I love Porto's but if they are taking the 5 to the 2 they won't be driving by it

A bit of a detour, but Donut Man in Glendora is legendary.

I don't know what time Petros in MB opens....but there are several very nice Greek appetizers there. I think they have a menu online....

Hot Wings from Robin's BBQ in Pasadena might be an option. It's right off the 210 fwy (Rosemead exit) on the way to Sierra Madre and they'll do a big tray of them that transports well.

PS - it's up to you but I would take the 110 fwy N and exit Orange Grove. Left on Orange Grove and take it north to the 210 fwy East on ramp. Very easy and takes you right past the Tournament of Roses House.

The pie at Phillipes is pretty good. Of course, the sandos are their calling card, but the pies ain't too bad. You could exit the 110 at Hill I believe. Right before Dodger Stadium.

Egg Rolls from Lemongrass in Eagle Rock. Little fried, very yummy. I had them for an xmas party and they were the first thing to go. If you exit Colorado off the 2 it will be past Eagle Rock Blvd on your right. Keep going east on Colorado to get onto the 134 freeway. Or on that same route is the Italian Bakery, they have excellent cookies and pastries. Keep in mind the bakery closes at 1pm on Sunday
