Happy Hour

I am heading out with a friend on the earlier side 4ish....where can we go for "good" (ie: not bar food, nachos fries, etc) snacks and drinks. Back bay, S End. I live in the city but feel like I ran out of ideas. thx!

Great Bay has a decent one - it used to be awesome, but now it is just good. I got 2 big fish tacos, 2 chicken sliders, and to mustard glazed ribs for 15 bucks. A 4 piece sashimi sampler was 10. I miss their old sand dollar menu, but all good things...

Tantric Bar and Grill (Indian food) has a happy hour menu when you sit at the bar.

Late last fall, the Union Bar & Grill also did some great freebies at the bar. I haven't tried the newest offerings, but several times I did try the previous offereings. They would be hard to beat in any other restaurant. I usually get to the Union for a late dinner, but on a couple of occasions when I was headed to the Calderwood for a performance, I stopped by for the fall specials. I can't believe they have a Rusty Nail on the cocktail menu for six dollars. I may head there even if I don't have some theater to attend.

union has complimentary apps at the bar 530 -7 tho I have not tried them myself- has anyone?

I haven't been to Masa in the S.End, but was at the Woburn location. The $1 tapas were quite good, and the bar there was as well. I hear they've got a great Tequila selection!

Had the Masa tasting platter of different 10 tapas for $5 bucks. Very nice and tasty.

I have to take exception to hotoynoodle's description of the food at McCormick and Schmick's at Quincy Market, I go there two or three times a week and the bar menu is the best in town. For me, this is a late lunch as I usually go out to dinner after nine. The burgers are mostly cooked as ordered. I usually get the fried cod sandwich without the bread and it's a perfect small meal. To describe the food as being pretty bad is just not accurate. I can assure you that I don't go there for to eat something bad. The bar menu runs from 3:30 to 6:30 there. When there's a game at the Garden, the place can be packed early. I suggest you try it again.

i tried it a few times at the park square location. it was pretty terrible, so i haven't bothered since.

i disagree my friend. i admit i may be biased in their favor because the prices are so low, but on tuesdays they have $1 oysters, and in combination with their very runofthemill sandwiches or mussels plate, it's a great deal.

McCormick and schmick in the Park Plaza Hotel has a good bar menu with low prices between 4 and 6PM. Only in the bar section.

masa does a decent early and late happy hour.

Great Bay's dollar menu has gone away sadly. They actually expanded it recently, but now it is no more. Apparently, some people went and abused the dollar oysters (like really abused it). Seems like they should have just set a limit on how many you can get that way. Maybe they still will, but right now no such luck :-/

They do have some kind of all night value menu or something, but I'm not sure of the details and I don't know how good it is. The dollar menu there was a ridiculous value. Sad to see it go.

Shoot, that's a bummer. If someone gets the scoop on the value menu, please post. You're right, they could have easily set a 6 oyster limit or something and I've never seen anyone order more than 1 or 2 rounds of apps when I was there.

I guess what I should have said before is that the Sand Dollar menu as we know it has gone away. There used to be a much wider selection of $1 items. I'll probably give the new iteration a try, but it just seems like it's not longer the ridiculous value that it once was (I suppose this is the point, to some extent).
