Hank's Seafood in Charleston??
Thinking about going here for dinner and wondering if locals or anyone has been lately and what is your opinion on food/service etc? This place doesn't seem as expensive as some like McCrady's/Magnolia's and seems more like our price range-probably more our style. Thanks!
We walked out last year after experiencing some of the worst possible service. The guy was completely incompetent, but put in charge of a prime section on his first day (!?!). He was completely overwhelmed, and we sat there for a good while, alone and lonely, with only his occasional apologies for sustenance, so we just cut our losses and scrammed.
It was surreal. I've never seen anything like it.
I've never had an experience even close to UJ, and I have been to Hank's numerous times. If you go, and like raw oysters, try the raw oyster sampler. The oysters are some of the best in town, and the sampler includes oysters from all over the world. Hank's serves classic Charleston style seafood, and they make a good key lime pie. Have a good time.
Hank's is reliable. It may not be the best in town, it's not cutting-edge, but everything I've had there has been good , except I found the fried seafood platter disappointing.
Hank's is middle of the road for Charleston in terms of quality and price. As long as you don't order a fried platter or the scallops (they give you way too few for the price), you're likely to be happy with your purchase. I think the quality has gone down a bit over the last few years, but it's still a better option than the Hyman's and A.W. Shucks of the world and worse than those you mentioned. Still I think you're better off spending a few extra dollars and going to one of the nicer places (SNOB or FIG are similar in price to Hank's and make significantly better food).
Hope this helps!

My husband and I have been eating at Hanks for years and have always been pleased. I really like Hanks for fried oysters.
