Heading into Charleston for the day with a bunch of friends....next Monday or Tues

They are in pursuit of the perfect she crab soup they remember from their visit there years ago.....

so, they mention some place called the Ice house or Ice Box in an area known as the market area? that still around? with she crab soup?

and another place - I have to go find the note I scribbled - I forget it now...

while I go look for my other note

Needing my CH's to do me right here on the She Crab soup !!!!

  1. I second 82 Queen. They're known for their she-crab soup, although a lot of the rest of it tends to be mediocre. Crabcakes are good there. Also, Tristan is a fine dining contemporary French style place - they do a nice she-crab soup where they pour it into your bowl tableside. Never even heard of the Ice House.

Not sure why my first reply was deleted, but I'll repeat in what is hopefully a less offensive manner: skip the Ice House. I'm not sure if it's even open anymore. I made the 82 Queen recommendation and said the same thing as dcraig - they don't have a lot of standouts in their menu, but the she-crab soup has always been very good and they've been known for that dish for many years.

Henry's is not there anymore. In its place is Hank's, a seafood restaurant, and they have a good she crab soup.

HANKS have a good she crab soup????

          1. re: lizzy

Henry's is on the Market and is still there -- Hank's is a block off it.

            SNOBs has great she-crab soup.

            1. re: DavidA

Does Henry's have she crab soup?

              1. re: DavidA

I must be confused. If you read the back of Hank's menu it says they are in the spot of a famous Charleston restaurant, I thought it was Henry's, obviously I was wrong. Do you know what restaurant I am thinking of?

                1. re: lizzy

Did the Garden & Gun use to be there?

                  1. re: tennreb

I don't think it's Garden & Gun, that just doesn't sound correct to me. However if memory serves me right, the menu names a restaurant and says some of the more famous dishes of the previous restaurant have been kept on the menu at Hank's. I also believe there is a map on the menu pointing out famous locations around Charleston from years gone by. Does any of this ring a bell? Please tell me I'm not crazy, at least not about this. ;-)

          2. I don't really want to highjack...so please list further places downtown.

I'm wondering about places that are not located on the peninsula.

Jay, if you do a search on "Charleston", you'll find a million recommendations. You may want to post a new thread and specify where and what type of cuisine you like.

            2. Hank's has the best I've found, but she-crab soup is an overrated dish in my opinion.

              1. OK
                hers my update:

We had our first She crab soup for lunch at 82 Queen.....

My stalwart SHE crab afficiandos declared it a fine soup......

I enjoyed my first experience with it as well......
(ou overall luncheon experience @ 82 Queen was well worth it - but that is another post)

On the way out of Charleston - we decided to pick somewhere less glam and searched for she crab soup on the menu

It was between Marina Variety and Charleston Crab House .

The group voted for Charleston Crab House as it was on the way home in Mt Pleasant area....

Again - while VERY different in texture and some minor flavor differences - primarily stemming from the sherry added in the kitchen - the Crabhouse got a thumbs up on their she crab soup as well from the lovers of said soup

I preferred the 82 Queen - but I like a lighter hand and the Charleston Crab House was thicker by comparison and a wee too much sherry from the kitchen for my tasted

Also CCH had more actual crab meat in it than 82 Queen....

(awesome lump crab cake though !!!)

PS. if anyone cares - when we were sitting at the airport at Myrtle Beach waiting for the plane home - - a guy next to us overheard us talking about the she crab experiences -

He HIGHLY recommended MAYORS in Pawleys Island, MB for she crab - - he confessed he was a she crab soup addict and it is awesome there - the best he has had...)
