Patticakes in Pasadena-any good?

I have to get a very small cake in a few weeks and thinking of buying one at Patticakes but I've never been there. I'm eyeing this place specifically b/c of location and hours of operation. I can't go out of Pasadena to go to Porto's or really anywhere where else and I'd like to try something new other than Victor Benes or Whole Foods. I also have to pick the cake up early in the day around 8 am and none of the cupcake places are open until 10.

Anyone been there? If so what cakes are recommended? Thanks!!

  1. The quality at Patticakes is very good and the cakes are beautiful -- particularly the ones topped with fresh flowers. However, once I discovered Pastries by Nancy in Altadena, I haven't been back. Their cakes are very similar but significantly less expensive. I love their version with cream and raspberry filling between the layers! Pastries by Nancy is in the same funky strip shopping center as the amazing Bulgarini Gelato -- the NW corner of Lake Ave. and Altadena Drive. Depending on where you're driving from, it shouldn't take you much longer than a trip to Patticakes.

It's been a few years since I've had anything from Pastries by Nancy but if the cakes are still the same as before, they make incredibly good cakes, the best I can remember eating anywhere.

I agree -- I brought a cake from Pastries by Nancy to a birthday dinner with over 60 guests. The dinner was very good which often means that a lot of people will skip the cake or just take a bite. Instead, everyone inhaled their first piece and asked for seconds! There wasn't a crumb left.

Here's a link to their cake specs... You'll find pictures and other information on the site. The cake I brought to the party was a large sheet cake: marble cake with bavarian cream & raspberry filling topped with chocolate ganache. It really depends on what you like. I'm not much of a chocoholic so figured that the choice I made would work for those for whom it really isn't desert unless there is some chocolate included, as well as those like me who prefer fruit flavors. But I've had lots of different flavors from this bakery and have never been disappointed.

    2. Hands down the cakes at Nancy's are delicious and reasonably priced for what you get. I like Patticakes for their muffins. I have never found their cakes to be as good tasting as they are good looking.
