Time: 11.45 - 12.30

On the Menu: Olympic Breakfast, 6.95, Cheeseburger with Fries, 6.95

Arrived, was quite busy, but we were seated quickly after putting our names on the list. They have an area to the side where you can wait or drink coffee which is nice.

Restaurant looks good inside, but there are not enough tables - they seat you in a large booth with another party if there are only 2 or 3 of you which complicates the ordering and billing process. We were sat across from a couple with a toddler which was fine, this is Little Chef, not the Fat Duck. There are an assortment of games to keep kids occupied which was an entertaining touch - we enjoyed playing Hungry Hippos while we waited.

The breakfast was good and well cooked for the most part - half of the slice of toast was well done. Again, this is Little Chef. I was really impressed with the bacon and the sausage, they were full of flavour. They were out of black pudding and mushrooms and made up for this with more bacon. No complaint there.

Burger wasn't so great. Had ordered a bacon cheese burger, but it only came with cheese. The meat to bun ratio was all off with the meat cloaked in a massive, floury bap without seeds. Meat had a good taste, but the cheese was grated and not completely melted. Fries were okay. Not the best value for money.

Overall it was a good experience. Service as to be expected was a bit slow since they were on tv last week. The kitchen appeared to be understaffed, with lots of waitstaff fluttering about seemingly doing little but moving quickly.

Enjoyed the experience. If they all go this way, and become a bit better managed and staffed I would make a return visit. Big improvement on what Little Chef was before. Hope it sticks.

Thanks for your report, nanette. After watching the shows, we were interested in how things were working out in Popham. We were quite close to there a few weeks ago, and I wish we'd have known about what was going on. I think we would have tried it out.

I read the other day that one of the Popham managers had left. It sounded to me as if he was brought in simply for the reality programme ... his home was two hours away!

We can live in hope that this project works out. :-)
