Pershing Square might be good, but the service has been so bad twice there that I left before ordering.

I second Macchiato, or consider Amish Market. Or if you want non pastry food that you can sit and take your time to eat, I like Morning Star Cafe better than John's or Comfort. (on 2nd ave btw 50th and 51st)

I favor the Macchiato Espresso Bar, 141 E 44th, for its latte, almond croissant, chocolate almond croissant, and maple pecan danish. If you're looking for something in the bacon & eggs line, there's John's Coffee Shop, 823 2nd Ave @ 44th St, but I doubt it's a significant improvement over Comfort Diner.
