I second cupackes, I use magnolia bakery's recipe and decorate accordingly.

I will be putting gold sugar crystals on vanilla buttercream frosting, topping it off with a candy shaped football (found at my baking store)

That 'Death by Chocolate' makes a lot, and it's always a crowd pleaser, and you need to make it at least a day ahead

        Ingredients:
1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix
1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
        1 2/3 cups milk
3/4 cup strong brewed coffee (I usually add Kalua or Godiva liquor to the coffee, not to exceed 3/4 cup liquid)
1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped
        topping, thawed
6 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered toffee
        bars, frozen and crushed

        Directions:
        1. In a 9x13 in pan, bake cake according to package directions. Cool and crumble. Make pudding, according to package directions, with milk.
        2. In a large trifle or other glass serving bowl, place half of the crumbled cake. Pour half of the coffee over the cake, and spread half of the pudding over that. Top with half of the whipped topping, sprinkled with half the crumbled candy bars. Repeat layers in the same order. Refrigerate until serving.

Prepare a chocolate custard with a little mint extract in it and pipe it into cream puff shells. Nice hot cup of coffee (it doesn't work well with beer) to wash it down.

What about a scoop dessert, like a trifle, bread pudding, tiramisu where people can take as much or as little as they want?

Jacques Pepin makes an apricot tart using a flour tortilla which he tops with a mixture of melted butter and sugar, the adds a layer of drained canned apricots over which he sprinkles sugar. He bakes that in the oven while he reduces the juices of the apricots to a syrup, then drizzles the syrup over the baked tart before serving. I think that serving something like that with a scoop of ice cream on the side would be a hit with any crowd and it doesn't take a lot of effort to prepare.

how about setting up a bar/buffet so guests can make their own sundaes (or crepes, or shortcakes)?

you could also do an assortment of cupcakes, and decorate half with a Cardinals theme & half for the Steelers...unless everyone's supporting one team ;)
