Gotta add Diddy Riese in Westwood Village on Broxton. What is more comforting than three big cookies for a buck, or two with a milk? Or a fresh-made ice cream sandwich for barely more, or a big beef hotdog and a soda for two bucks?

re: FrugalDanny
Take a look at these two prior threads for the purposes of cross checking the places you currently have with ones you may be missing. The older of the two threads, (Modernist's essential list) is a still a GREAT resource even if it's a little bit dated. And Maxzook needs to be singled out for his selfless and incredibly helpful act of finding as many of these places and listing them in Chow Places as humanly possible.

I agree it will be a Herculean task to create and maintain this map.
One thing you might want to be aware of: Google Maps silently ignores all POIs after the first 200 POIs, at least when using KML and GPX -- at least that was the case eight months ago (I haven't checked recently). I got around it by breaking my lists into multiple lists, but it gets unwieldy and performance starts to really suffer. I can show you an example if you like.
That said, I'd add the following places that I didn't see mentioned yet:
Fab Hot Dogs
The Oinkster
Best Fish Taco in Ensenada
Phillips Barbecue
Brent's Deli
Greenblatt's Delicatessen
Pinches Tacos
Jay Bee's House of Fine Bar-B-Que
Brats Brothers
Porto's Bakery
Vicious Dogs
The Counter
Don Huarache
Big Mike's Philly Steaks & Subs
Baby Blues BBQ
Pie 'n' Burger
Father's Office (borderline cheap)
Lucky Devils (borderline cheap)Depending upon your cutoff point for ethnic (I notice Mexican's already included), I'd also propose these:
Jeon Ju
Chunju Han-il Kwan
Pho Minh
Falafel Arax
Kyochon Chicken
BonChonThere are some 260 more cheap places on my "to try" list that I've compiled based on CH recommendations. If even only 50% of them turn out to be good . . .

I personally think of Chinese, Vietnamese, or Filipino food as comfort food, particularly when you consider dumplings or soups. Ok really, anything with rice works for me. That's a huge category for me to breach, but just off the top of my head Luscious Dumpling and Golden Deli are pretty cheap.
I also put in another vote for Jongewaard's Bake n Broil. Food is definitely comfort food, though it can be hit and miss. But the baked goods are CHEAP for what you get, and always excellent.

El Tepeyac doesn't exactly fit into my "cheap" eats category lately. Have you seen their prices? Most of their burritos are now $10 and my favorite Manuels Special (regular) is like $18 now. Saw a family of 5 eating there one day on the patio and I calculated their lunch must have been about $60.

Señor Fish is also in South Pas (Mission at Grand, across from TJ's) and Eagle Rock Blvd. at Norwalk. I've found the flavors a bit better in SoPa, but the bosky little terrace on Eagle Rock is a much nicer place to be. Shrimp, scallop, and shrimp/scallop tacos highly recommended, as are the fish of course.

When you say Howard's , are you talking about Howard's Bacon Avocado Burger's on Venice Blvd.? Sonora Cafe closed a few months ago, FYI. Where is Hooked on Fish & Panini Pizza? TYIA

re: Burger Boy
I'll happily second Danny's rec for Hook'd on Fish. I am addicted to their cajun seared ahi wrap. Great fish, cooked right (seared outside and rare inside) rolled up in a nice wrap with cabbage, rice and some kind of delicious cajun sauce, all for around $10.
In this economy, I keep worrying that they, like so many others, will disappear...particularly when you consider that the rent/lease cost in that center has got to be astronomical. Here's hoping they stick around!

Let us not be forgetting Pann's, whose pea soup has comforted the dickens out of me, repeatedly. All their other stuff, too. Leroy's in Monrovia is mighty comforting, as is Harry's in Burbank. And one could easily drown many bleak sorrows in Pies and Burgers...

re: Will Owen
Will, I'm glad you mentioned the pea soup at Pann's. I had it last weekend (for the second time) and my only disappointment with it was that I didn't order a paint bucket's worth of it:) I could sit there and spoon that soup for an entire meal. What a comfort food their pea soup is followed by some of their hot wings.
-
re: Will Owen
We used to go to Pann's regularly but no more!
The prices on the new menu are totally ridiculous. Over $9 for a diner hamburger, etc. Everything is overpriced. You can go to your favorite specialty restaurant for the items you crave and save.
Too bad. I turned in my Pann's card.

-
re: Wes
Hold-on Wes. I notice prices as much as anyone but two big factors come into play at Pann's -- best Fried chicken (wings or meal) and that Googie ambiance. With so many post in recent months about some of the best places closing up shop we have a duty to keep a place open that has the best fried chicken in town with the best "future" ambiance. If Pann's should close then we have only second best fried chicken and no more "future." Oh, did I mention the pea soup? and about those....

re: kevin
kevin, have you had the breakfast sandwich on a English muffin or the
"Break Fast" burrito at Tommy's? Fast, cheap, comfort, and maybe the most "Los Angeles" of anything mentioned on this thread IMO. Same chili that they put on those chili dogs but something delicious happens to it when combined with all those other things (sausage, egg, cheese, mayo, pickel, tomato, onion, or in the burrito they include a hashbrown). -
