apple pan is not exactly cheap. neither is sonora cafe or chichen itza (at least not the restuarant0.

but most of these restaurants are delicious except perhaps tommy's.

          1. re: kevin

kevin, have you had the breakfast sandwich on a English muffin or the
"Break Fast" burrito at Tommy's? Fast, cheap, comfort, and maybe the most "Los Angeles" of anything mentioned on this thread IMO. Same chili that they put on those chili dogs but something delicious happens to it when combined with all those other things (sausage, egg, cheese, mayo, pickel, tomato, onion, or in the burrito they include a hashbrown).

            1. re: JeetJet

that is so wrong with the egg, sausage and cheese, to add chili, pickles etc., is just WRONG!

              1. re: Burger Boy

Burger Boy, you go eat one of those Tommy's Original breakfast sandwiches on a English Muffin with "Everything" on it. After you finish it clean your face and hands three times and then type your response.

                1. re: JeetJet

I tried one, that was all she wrote, not my cup of tea!

              1. re: schrutefarms

Anyone know the closest Tommy's to Palos Verdes? Breakfast sandwich sounds terrific!

                1. re: soto i am

Hey soto i am, Enjoy and report back

original on beverly and rampart, a couple miles west of downtown la.

                    1. re: kevin

"Original Tommy’s" is the trademark name they use no matter what the location to differentiate it from other Tommy's knockoffs.

          2. My Taco in Highland Park
Terried Sake House in West LA

            2. Let us not be forgetting Pann's, whose pea soup has comforted the dickens out of me, repeatedly. All their other stuff, too. Leroy's in Monrovia is mighty comforting, as is Harry's in Burbank. And one could easily drown many bleak sorrows in Pies and Burgers...

The won ton soup and shrimp lo mein and shrimp egg foo young at Wang's Palace in Monrovia has comforted the poe out of me, and bloodlessly too. ;-)

                1. re: ChinoWayne

Hey Wayne, I just drove by the new location of Wang's two nights ago. Still not open but i talked to the owner as the crew worked late building the dinning room and kitchen. He told me thinks they can open next month and to try again then. This is true comfort food.

                  1. re: JeetJet

Thanks, Jeet, we will really need our fix when they do open up.

                2. re: Will Owen

Added Pann's right before Peter's Blue Chip - should probably put it after eh?

                  1. re: FrugalDanny

No, that's Panini's Pizza, not to be confused with. Doubt that Panini's Pizza has pea soup, though I could be wrong...

                    1. re: FrugalDanny

Oops, sorry - you meant you just added it to your own list. Never mind...

                    2. re: Will Owen

Will, I'm glad you mentioned the pea soup at Pann's. I had it last weekend (for the second time) and my only disappointment with it was that I didn't order a paint bucket's worth of it:) I could sit there and spoon that soup for an entire meal. What a comfort food their pea soup is followed by some of their hot wings.

                      1. re: Will Owen

We used to go to Pann's regularly but no more!

The prices on the new menu are totally ridiculous. Over $9 for a diner hamburger, etc. Everything is overpriced. You can go to your favorite specialty restaurant for the items you crave and save.

Too bad. I turned in my Pann's card.

                        1. re: Wes

My birthday coupon gave me $8 off, so the burger would have been a dollar. Still a good value.

                          1. re: Wes

Hold-on Wes. I notice prices as much as anyone but two big factors come into play at Pann's -- best Fried chicken (wings or meal) and that Googie ambiance. With so many post in recent months about some of the best places closing up shop we have a duty to keep a place open that has the best fried chicken in town with the best "future" ambiance. If Pann's should close then we have only second best fried chicken and no more "future." Oh, did I mention the pea soup? and about those....

                        2. When you say Howard's , are you talking about Howard's Bacon Avocado Burger's on Venice Blvd.? Sonora Cafe closed a few months ago, FYI. Where is Hooked on Fish & Panini Pizza? TYIA

                            1. re: Burger Boy

I'll happily second Danny's rec for Hook'd on Fish. I am addicted to their cajun seared ahi wrap. Great fish, cooked right (seared outside and rare inside) rolled up in a nice wrap with cabbage, rice and some kind of delicious cajun sauce, all for around $10.

In this economy, I keep worrying that they, like so many others, will disappear...particularly when you consider that the rent/lease cost in that center has got to be astronomical. Here's hoping they stick around!

                            2. This being a very large and casual city, and looking at your list, I would say there are more restaurants that meet your criteria than don't. I.e. this is going to be a pretty long list...
